Just saw this in a thread on Audiokarma; does anyone have this unit or know of a reputable review about it?

Shanling CR60

This is exactly the kind of functionality and form factor that I was looking for Fosi or SMSL to deliver one day... Much more than other compact players, this looks to have decent build quality, and is tray-load rather than slot-load...

Users are reporting some CD's will not work with the CR60. Sample below:

"Here is another CD with problems.
A Taste Of DMP - Compilation from the DMP label
Barcode: 0 89672 01466 9
https://www.discogs.com/de/release/...KOM6v2MZJB6iZR5LVWpM4IwaeHKY9slOt284otZwmosmJ

Ripping:
The CD cannot be ripped with the CR60 in RIP mode.

Playing:
The CD can be read in transport mode, but this takes a long time and is very noisy.
The CD cannot be played (track 1).
If you jump to the second track and want to play it, the CR60 simply switches off.

Other drives:
The CD can be ripped and played perfectly with XLD and a Plextor CD drive.
The CD can be played perfectly with a Cambridge CXC transport."

It appears to have CD compatibility issues with various releases. It's not going to "just work" like a Denon player. This product sounds interesting until your CD's don't rip and start making noises while playing. It's probably not just a firmware issue. I would label this as beta ware. Maybe they get it fixed? who knows. See more CR60 reports here:

It will be interesting to see how many CR60 units will be returned on Amazon. They may stop selling them if it's a large number?

If I was after a CD transport I'd definitely consider that.

Although I'd probably end up doing what I did, and get a vintage player with digitial output for £20

I prefer a top loading device (it may have the same mentioned issues, since it is from the same manufacturer):
Shanling ET3 Dedicated Digital CD Transport - MusicTeck

I don't know for sure on this specific player but other Shanling, Fiio and SMSL CD players I was considering didn't support gapless playback. I don't consider a device that lacks Red Book standard support to even be a real CD player. These players are quite expensive as well so I don't understand how a feature that key can be left out.

Bummer! Too many issues, then, for the price. I have no pressing need, so can wait the market out... In my main system, I still am using a Sony DVD player into a DAC via toslink for the most part.

Someone earlier brought up the Sony Playstation 1...I have a couple of those and still use as a CD player from time to time. They are OK but in stock format, nothing exceptional - my memory is they sound a bit "bright". But it is a nice form factor, and with the wireless controller module, decent to use.

A Sony DVD player hooked up to a DAC is a pretty solid CD player. With the Playstation, I have memories of the visualizer on there being fun, but it has been years since I had one hooked up. Probably not going to be anything special sound wise.

1. For CD burning I use the USB C Nolyth Apple SuperDrive compatible ext drive $26 to rip with Apple Music.

2. If you rip the CD's, no real reason to have a CD player as Audirvana -> RPI4/Moode -> USB -> RME ADI-2 Dac FS plays the CDs amazingly well.

3. If you absolutely need a great CD Transport, I use the Denon DCD-900NE with optical out to the RME ADI-2 Dac FS. That's of course when you are willing to waive the ability to playback your own custom playlists which Audirvana lets you create with ease.

I'd go for a Tascam CD-200. You can dismount the 19" rack ears.
I am too lazy  to check. Is that the same as the TEAC VRDS-701T?
EDIT: I checked. No, it's not.

I don't think there's an equivalent consumer CD player from Teac. You have to go pro and buy Tascam.
