CD Recorder Recommendation

My next step, when I get the time, will be to seek out and play around with an Audacity alternative for Linux so I can do any editing and converting to Flac there.
You don't need an alternative, since Audacity runs natively on Linux!

It does, but I've read about it recently being taken over by a company and now there's some privacy issues. A lot of people committed to open source are apparently turning away from it.

I tried Tenacity earlier, very briefly, but it doesn't seem to convert to Flac from what I could see.

Installed Ocenaudio now and going to try to learn that. I'm starting from scratch anyway, even if I went with Audacity, so might as well learn an Audacity alternative from the off.

I didn't know that. I just read about it and found that the company that took over Audacity is Muse, who makes MuseScore, which I also happen to use for sheet music. I've been using both for more than 15 years. It's great software, constantly improving.

The Audacity source code uses a GPL3 license. This allows people to charge for the software, but the source code must always be provided. So if the new owners get too greedy, the community will probably fork and maintain an open source free version.

There are already several forks it seems. Tenacity being one of them.

From my understanding, Audacity remains free, tbf, and there's also supposed to be an opt out option in terms of privacy.

As I'm learning from scratch anyway, I might just as well start with another open source, and Ocenaudio is the one I'm trying at the mo.

The Tascam SS -R1 flash recorder arrived already from a fantastic seller on Ebay. He included a CF card so I've had a play around already. Very easy to master the controls as it's pretty self explanatory.
BTW, those rack mount wings are easily removable. Looks like you aren't using them and they're just in the way.

Has anyone tried the Fostex CR500? Of course CF/SD is more convenient, but the thing looks nice... 24/96 is also nice, AES and more - just not sure I need it for anything. Still it's tempting...

What's the point of 96/24 with a recorder that writes to CD-RW? It would fill a disc (700 MB) in about 22 minutes! If you want higher bit rates, you're better off with a CF/SD or hard disk recorder like the Tascam DA3000 or Korg MR-2000S.

That's nice. Mind you, though, that standard CF by now already is a dying format. Hence it would most likely be smart to stock up on a few new standard CF cards in time, before these vanish from the regular market.

That's good advice since they have a limited number of writes before they start glitching, and eventually they will become rarer new and thus more expensive and difficult to obtain.
I recommend SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA6 as thats what I use in my Tascam HS8.

Oh, I didn't know that, thanks. I'll probably remove them then in that case, lol.

It's a really lovely bit of kit, btw. Thanks again for the recommendation.

Thanks, will do then. I only really need ones of a couple of gig really, since I'll likely only work with one album at a time so as not to confuse myself.

The one included is a 64gb Sandisk extreme. A pricey item in itself I notice. The seller really was first class! I think I struck lucky.

Like I say, I don't need it for anything, just looking for an excuse to have it around ;). I do have a home studio, so no lack of recording facilities. I already pointed to the superior convenience of CF/SD, so I was looking for someone with actual experience with the machine. That wasn't you, obviously.

Mind you, however, that cards with higher capacity should live longer. I.e., more partial rewrites possible due to more available storage space for wear-levelling.

Pick up a sd to cf adapter. The cost is under $20 USD.

Probably not a bad idea. Might be, that the SS-R1 only takes the slimmer CF I cards, though - so Subop should check for that before purchase.

I used to have the same issue with my Sony RCD-W500C. It would randomly reject discs for no reason. Switched to Tascam CD-RW900 and never looked back. Much more consistent.

Lol, it's very early days and I've no idea how long it will take me to learn an audio editing program, but boy is this harder work than just ripping vinyl to a CDRW!

Have you ever got the dreaded 'check disc' message on it?
