Poor Magic. We lost our beloved Max within a week of Magic's passing. He was only a little over 3 years old. It's still tough for me to think about it.

i talk with two asylum seeking cats about the living conditions here in the uk

Marmalade has an appointment at the Vet tomorrow to tap and drain accumulating fluid in his abdomen. While he's kind of a thick cat, he's not really fat. His chest girth is 16". Around his abdomen, 22"! All of this has seemingly started being visible over the last 4 months.

Did the vet explain why Marmalade has the fluid? Sorry if you’ve already posted the reason.

It’s linked to his cardio myopathy. Similar mechanism, according to the cardiologist, that has fluid building up around his heart and in his lungs.

The diuretic he’s on is very strong, but pushing it any harder would fry his kidneys.

Moral of the story is that fluid accumulation is a major sign something is wrong. Any cat guardian knows cats hide issues very well. But this is one that we can see and act on. If ever your cat looks like they swallowed a bocci ball, it might be worth the vet visit.
This began subtly, but didn’t look like he was getting fat. As it progressed, he started feeling like a water balloon. Most recently, the skin is very taught feeling; less squishy jiggle to it.

At the end of the day, it can interfere with blood flow which would compound any other underlying issue. Beyond that it is likely horribly uncomfortable.

It strangely doesn’t look so bad, but you can see the bulge around his midsection. This photo was taken only about 1-2 weeks ago when we reached out to the cardiologist about it.

Yes, I am remembering now he has heart troubles. It’s a good thing he has you to take care of him and comfort him. It’s really hard when they’re sick.

Thank you.

It takes a lot of focus and dedication to make this workable.

It’s also not inexpensive. We don’t have kids. We work hard and are relatively fortunate to be able to give him this added time. He is worth it. ;)
