This is a review and detailed measurements of the Carver PT-2400 dual mono power amplifier. It is on kind loan from a member and cost US $2,400 when announced in 1991.

The amplifier came in both consumer (TFM-75) and professional versions. This pro version seems to have taken the consumer version and encased in thick sheet metal. I expected it to be light like my Carver amplifier but it is quite heavy. It has all the features of a pro amplifier include a fan that runs all the time:

As you see, it has dual 12-amp IEC inputs. I only have one circuit on my bench so resorted to testing just channel 1.

The amp was professionally restored by a Carver employee. It worked solidly in my testing, with case temps remaining at room temperature. The aforementioned fan makes a low frequency hum that is not too loud due to its large size.

Carver PT-2400 Amplifier Measurements
At max sensitivity, it delivers 33 dB of gain. To make things more of a level playing field, I dialed that down to about 22 dB:

I was disappointed by the spray of harmonics which delivers performance below the bottom quartile of all amplifiers tested:

Noise performance is not great at 5 watts but gets much better at full power (meaning noise is mostly static):

The rail switching architecture likely requires an output filter which may be responsible for some frequency roll off and small load dependency:

Distortion as expected, hurts multitone performance:

Although not too bad compared to today's Pro amps.

Name of the game here is power and the PT-2400 delivers a ton of it:

We can see the jump in distortion when the output transistor rail voltages are increased. Keeping the voltage low at lower power levels reduces idle power consumption and hence heat generated but has that price.

Sweeping at different frequencies we see that high frequencies get even more distorted, similar to class D amps:

Conclusions
The PT-2400 lacks linearity as evidenced by high distortion. It is however, quite powerful and keeps up with modern professional amplifiers. I don't know how much it costs to get it refurbished on top of purchase price -- likely much higher than today's pro amplifier. In that regard, it only makes sense if you value its nostalgic value. Performance wise it doesn't bring much to the table.

Thanks Amir for another very interesting review! The results are likely expected for a power amp designed for professional sound reinforcement where the priorities of high power, durability and solid reliability are considered more important than very low distortion and noiseless operation.

As not all amps of this sort have an anticlipping circuit I wish that feature would have also been included in your testing - especially since I believe that Carver's use of an anticlipping circuit may have been involved in some threatened or actual legal action from McIntosh.

Re the Gemini derived spec sheet: I have found Gemini to often make significant mistakes in reporting the specs and basic configuration of several pieces of audio gear - even quite recently. These errors seem to be most prevalent in gear sold before the mid '90s.
 
I voted poor. For big power yet still low noise and distortion I would get an NC2k based amp.

 
I remember the days when Carver amps were something to lust after. It appears my desires were quite misplaced.

Today’s modern, Class D are powerful, clean and economical. These new marvels, based on Hypex or Purifi boards, make me blush.

Once again, Amir proves that we are living in a new reality for hi-fi. Enjoy it.

Is anyone here going to argue that the distortion of the relic isn't sufficient to produce an audible difference versus current ultra-low distortion amplifiers? I hope not.

Its distortion, particularly its high level of high-order harmonics will render it a pretty nasty listen.
 
The PT-2400 is basically a PA amp. The manual data show that it's THD is not in the 0.001 range. So I think it was made for high power and reliability which is shown by the 2x mono construction. Not specifically for HiFi usage. This is also stated by usage of a fan which can be noisy. Therefore I can't put much blame on it.

That was roughly my thoughts reading the review too. Picture it in beefy racks with castors off stage or behind the monster speaker stacks ruining your hearing at the clubs you visited in the early 90s. Looks like solid performance for that job. That level of distortion wouldn't have been a problem. Putting its SINAD in a diagram mostly full of modern hi-fi amps is not quite ... idk ... relevant?

How it compares with modern kilowatt PA amps would interest me. I recall a few have been reviewed here but haven't searched for them.
 
For pro use I think you'd be better off going Crown or Behringer, for domestic I'd expect it to have slightly rough and dull sound.

Thanks for the pics, JSmith. I like the look of the cooling design. I'd guess the fan draws air from what looks like a filter on the front panel through the channels between the heat sink fins.

On the other hand, judging from Amir's picture it doesn't look easy to access the inlet filter for cleaning or replacement.

 
Bob Carver said he could make a solid state amp sound like a tube amp, and given these high noise and distortion measurements, it looks like it was achieved that with this amp. Good thing I couldn’t afford such an amp back then.

I hadn’t thought about Carver amps in years and this review made me take a trip down memory lane.

A buddy in college (who always seemed to have too much money for a college kid) had a pair of Carver M-400s. He would occasionally DJ keg parties so that was his excuse to buy them.

I think he had some big Cerwin Vegas on the other end.

These little Carver cubes always stood out in the crowd.

While I was quite proud of my Harmon Kardon Citation pumping out sixty whole watts, these Carvers were rated at 200 into 8R (x 2) or 500 W into 8R mono. Those numbers were something from another world in the late 70’s/ early 80’s.

My how things have changed!
