I think it would depend on the material. On the AT33PTG/II, it seems to be some kind of foam. If it's synthetic, it will probably last for a while.

The damper on a MC cartridge may degrade over time, and some retippers can replace that, even rewind faulty coils on some cartridges. Of course it then becomes an economic arguement as it can be cheaper to replace the cartridge, but for irreplaceable cartridges, like now Koetsus, it might be something the owner wants to do.

Even with MMs, if the cartridge is precious to the owner, and original stylii are unavailable, a retip or rebuild could be worthwhile.
