I'd like to go to CanJam here in Southern California and audition open back models but I'm wondering if it will be too noisy. Just yesterday while listening to my Stax Lambda Signatures, my wife was wadding up a piece of paper two rooms away. I thought either the amp or phones were having a meltdown!

I've been to the Vegas CES show and it was prettty busy. I would not do any critical listening there unless I am at the esoteric section in a reserved hotel with dedicated sound rooms in each hotel room. Basically entire floors of the hotel become displays and you walk the halls looking for product on display in the hotel rooms. I've also seen a attempt at creating a sound booth with sound dampening wall panels w/ ceiling too but it was still a bit of a band aid solution and it was warm inside the booth.

The only thing I got from the shows was too drunk. Back in the day the Linn guys always had the best scotch.

I was expected to retain a level of professionalism during the daytime as I was wearing a CES show badge that said, "Buyer" on it and I worked for a large chain. But after hours we stayed awake nearly all night long in that beautiful January Las Vegas weather. By the time it was go home time we where exhausted and ready for home from too many scotch and whatever else we where into. Peeps would hang at the casinO but I'm not into gambling so I was off to nightclubs and shows where the booze was flowing pretty good.

Yeah, I was approached by 3 of them over a couple of days while I sat at a very big wooden bar resting. One was wearing furs and had what appeared to be lingerie underneath. Pretty good looking women I thought. I was hitched up at the time and so I was a good boy. :D

CanJam is a small show so not very noisy. A few companies also have their own rooms. So I think you can do a reasonable job of listening there. Be sure to take your own source/playback gear and not rely on what is there.

CanJam is not very noisy because the overwhelming majority of the demos/listening is on headphones.

It's probably like watching a TV at a store, it's gonna be a different environment when you get home.

The main fun is looking at gear and discovering new brands or designs, and talking with people. Never did any listening worth a damn.

One time I walked into a room where the presenter was going on and on about the output of a bookshelf with a 6 inch woofer that was just gushing deep bass. Lucky mode helped the pitch.
