I suspect that a speaker is placed atop the turntable and the controller rotates it to various angles while the computer captures audio response data to create spinorama measurement data groups.

As noted, this is for measuring a speaker in 3-D space. It automates rotating the speaker accurately instead of doing it manually.

Higher end solution would use a microphone array so that the vertical axis is covered as well. The combination then produces the "spinorama" type measurements you see in my reviews.
