Can anyone explain the vinyl renaissance?

If I were going totally for blingy, this is my kind of blingy. The Tentogra Oscar turntable:

I love a big beautiful slab of wood and combination of beautiful materials.

Another version:

The European designer is big in to architecture and paid tribute to one of his favourite architects, Oscar Niemeyer, with the turntable taking visual cues
from this old Niemeyer design: Brazilian National Congress, the work of Oscar Niemeyer

I often agree with @MattHooper, but not this time - sorry. And I would bet that Oscar Niemeyer could in fact have designed a beautiful turntable and not such a disproportionate device, where in my eyes nothing is right, not even the finish or the horrible lighting of the base with blue LEDs.

There are those who, to this day, laud the performance of those early Sony DDs.
They are held in very high regard in -- certain circles.
I am quite happy with the one that's here.
That is true, but unfortunately there are many other great vintage turntables of similar fame. If you wanted to put up only some of them, you would have a museum. I decided against becoming a museum keeper.

What does this have to do with the subject of the op?
You may not have noticed. But after 170 pages and well over 3000 posts, the conversation..... meanders. If we'd banned posts that weren't strictly about the OP we might only have about 10 pages.

What he is saying makes perfect sense and is a sensible solution to the limitations of the turntable. Capacitance has an affect on the high frequencies, usually around the sensitive main resonance area on most MM cartridges (for convenience think of it as a low pass filter) and in certain situations can lead to less than ideal results. This is why most cartridges offer loading ranges. If the cables have capacitance higher than recommended capacitance then there is technically an incompatibility issue, especially as the phono stage is likely to add further, not insignificant, capacitance as well. MC cartridges generally are not as affected by capacitance and thus can be a good solution to the limitations of the tonearm cable. This is one of the rare situations where cables actually matter.

I for one find it strange that some of the Clearaudio cartridges have a recommended capacitance of 100pF (such as the Virtuoso pictured) while their tonearm cables can have nearly double that! Insanity.

An example for reference:

I also have found it odd regarding the cable capacitance. My table came bundled with the Maestro 2 cartridge which is not a good match for the cable. Their more expensive arms have a lower capacitance cable and the new version of the Universal tonearm has a DIN plug to allow you a choice.

You may have hit the “mother load” there! A 10 page limit would certainly be a deterrent to excessive BS.

Oops, another off topic comment! LOL

I cannot afford a turntable museum -- I guess I went for an (FM) tuner museum instead, upon reflection. ;)

After reading thousands of posts.
Could be an example of Getting the best out of vinyl listed under masochist.

  • (in general use) a person who enjoys an activity that appears to be painful or tedious.
"what kind of masochist would take part in such an experiment?"
Explains why I ditched records 30 years ago and never looked back.

Edit: 40 years, forgot how damn old I am.

They are arguing about semantics, limitations and what ifs. It's a good argument although the specs speak for themselves even if one of the sources is good enough if setup well and not up to date technology.
With the exception of transducers, home audio is a solved problem.

Now we just have to wait for digital to catch up to vinyl in quality. It’s getting there but not yet.
:p
Matt's post is now permanently archived and will forever be around :p

I shall make frequent references to it.
