I found a decent phone to use as a dap, with space for a big microsd, but I have a Fosi DS2 with cable usb c to usb c and the phone as an old with a micro-usb. Which is the right cable to use to plug the FOSI to the phone please?

Sounds like you need a micro-usb to usb-c cable.

...I've put labels on all my C, mini, and micro USB cables, and I've also labeled most of the stuff they plug-into... So I don't have to put on my reading glasses or use a magnifying glass... I also put a dot on the "top" of the mini & micro & B cables so I don't try to plug them in upside-down.

If the phone has not been used for a long time, try plugging in/out several times, maybe the contacts are not clean.
The other possibility - the phone is without digital output and / or cannot power the Fosi - that would be bad luck.

If the phone is so old it doesn’t have usb-c, maybe it can’t act as a USB-host

Best chance of success will be a Micro USB OTG Adapter:
Plus a bog standard USB 2.0 Type-A to Type-C cable.
Direct Micro USB to USB-C cables may or may not work.
If you're looking for one, make sure it says OTG in the product name or description.
Also check your phone's settings and enable OTG if that option exists.

Ok I used a stupid little adapter just to test the stock cable with the phone and it works. it's lousy so as it moves stops to work so I'm going to buy a better one. At least now i know that the phone can easily drive the Fosi
