Hi folks, I'm doing a renovation, and the HTPC (a Mac mini running OMV) will live in the basement, with Smurf tube running about 20m to the living room where the TV and powered speakers live on the ceiling. I'm not too worried about video, it seems like there are passive & active HDMI options that will do that distance.
For audio, I have a Schiit Modi 3+ DAC, and I was originally thinking of running an analog cable the whole distance. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere, running RCA would be asking for trouble. XLR is I guess the answer for long analog runs, with I think a DI box (?) at each end.
But then I realized, why not put the audio over the HDMI that I already am running, and then mount an HDMI extractor and the DAC behind the TV. My understanding of HDMI is that if it works at all, then it will deliver perfect audio.
So the audio would be: [Mac mini] --- 20m HDMI (maybe active) ---> [HDMI extractor] --- short SPDIF ---> [Schiit Modi 3+] --- short RCA ---> [Powered speakers]
Does that make sense as the best option?
