And: https://www.rt.com/news/405558-mars-sun-blast-nasa/

This is no small peanuts, and not the time to fool around:

IN BRIEF
"A massive solar storm called a coronal mass ejection could knock out Earth's electrical grid and communication systems, causing trillions of dollars in damage. With such an event likely in the future, two astrophysicists have proposed the construction of a shield to protect Earth."

_____

What do you guys propose to prepare ourselves; hiring Elon Musk, or Donald Trump?
Forget the second guy.

“Just an Earth-sized loop of one-centimeter thick copper wire weighing 100,000 tons and presumably powered by a 1 TW solar power farm [should do it]”

Seems like there would be a problem with keeping the thing at the LaGrange point, if it is that big, and has a T-watt magnetic field attracting/repelling the magnetic fields of the Sun and/or the Earth.

There are proposals for Solar Sails to propel spacecraft out of the Solar System. If interacting magnetically instead, wouldn't similar motive forces apply?

Plus, its surface area (sail) would be a not inconsiderable .16 square mile (that's a square .4 miles on a side), not counting the solar panels.

Solar Panels: at 1000W / sq meter = a billion square meters = 386 sq miles of solar cells with 100% efficiency. Multiply area x 4 or 5 because they aren't.

Well, that pretty much renders the surface area of the "wire" moot.

---

How about we just monitor the Space Weather and shut down the grid for a few hours when it looks too windy?

Harden future satellites (they have a replacement cycle of only a few years already, don't they?) -- "The average life span of a LEO satellite is approximately 5 years, but the average life span for a GEO satellite is approximately 8 years."

"In 2015 the total installed electricity generation summer capacity:[10] in the United States was 1,064.1 Gigawatts."

That's one Twatt (tera-watt).

I suppose the deflector wouldn't need to be powered full time, so, if they beam the unused energy down here to run my Krells, it might not be such a bad deal.

Looks like we may have a 3-day notice for it: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/scie...-be-caused-by-a-massive-solar-storm-25627394/

"Both NASA and the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center monitor solar activity and issue warnings when CMEs and other alterations in the solar wind occur. The SWPC’s current 3-day forecast predicts no storms over the weekend, despite this new enormous sunspot.

If a massive CME were spotted, such 3-day forecasts give us some lead time: there are some measures electric utilities could take to protect their equipment, such as quickly disconnecting transformers. Polar flights, which travel at the highest altitudes, could be rerouted to avoid contact with damaging solar particles, and some satellites could be switched into a safe mode to minimize damage. Here on Earth, at the very least, we’d have some time to prepare for potential power blackouts and other problems.

It might be a good time to go back to reading books and such I have not touched for years. :D

Yes, it's mostly hydrogen and helium nuclei coming our way, not photons (8 minute travel time and NO warning)

93m miles / 72 hour notice = around 1.3 million mph particle speed... 359 miles per second.

Barely a pimple on the relativistic scale.

*imagines a Cosmic Ray storm

Or a "nearby" supernova... (where "nearby" is 180,000,000,000,000 miles or so)

You Mexican too? :D

But it is a global issue, ...global first. ...And we need more banks with more cash from the poor and alcoholics and drug addicts filling them banks.
That shield has to be paid by someone...and there are no better investors than the lower of the lowest social classes to build and pay for that space shield, Canadians and Mexicans included...under a fair America NAFTA deal.

That's why they estimate that it would cost $40 billion per day just to operate.

Your Krell amps wouldn't crank enough juice into your stats.
