Buckeye PURIFI 1ET9040BA Amp Review

While rising, it is definitely still below audible thresholds.

It also looks worse than it is because distortion before this rise is so incredibly low .

Inaudible yes the harmonics are >20kHz , 2nd harmonic of 15k is 30 k good luck hearing that :)

This could be a proxy for other issues, but in case of purify it’s not .
Edit: it’s a design choice of bandwidth and bandwidth of the feedback loop
 
Background

I bought these amps to run Infinity Kappa 9s. For those of you who may not have heard of these speakers before, they are a late 80s vintage with a monster impedance drop to about 1 ohm in the 70hz range. Historically, these speakers have killed lesser amps trying to drive this near short. I had been running the speakers biamped with a Mark Levinson No 29 on the highs and an adcom GFA 555 II on the lows.

Class D introduction

The transition from my old amplification solution to the monoblocks started when I put a small second system together with the 3e A7 monos. These were my first new amplifier in a long time and first foray into the new class D offerings. I liked the little 3e so much I decided to try them on the Kappas. First running highs which brought quite a lot more clarity compared to the Levinson.

I decided to try the 3e as a true monoblock running the kappas full range. Outside of really pushing volume the little amps were outclassing two big beefy Class AB amps of yore. I got curious how the buckeye amps would fare given the power and current delivery on hand, this would effectively solve amplification for these notorious speakers.

Enter the Buckeye 1ET9040BA Monos

They are running in low gain fed by the pre amp stage of a topping a70 pro and an smsl d6 dac.

They retained the neutral character of the 3e and perhaps the treble was less hot/present. The biggest difference came in the form of headroom. My room and ears limit SPLs before the amps are even mildly taxed.

Movie performance

Outside of music the Kappas form my front stage and phantom center in a small 7.2.2 multichannel setup.

The buckeye amps are certainly overkill for this but the level of transparency for movies and shows is fantastic. Coherent and full range from deep bass to highs
Haha wow. That's really the best compliment an amp can get in terms of stability. Even "about 1 Ohm" is a kinda understatement because it's really 0.8. :D

Infamous, notorious amp killers indeed. Even the "cute little" A7 does it with grace, quite an achievement especially for the price. Chapeau!
 
Just when I thought I found the amp for me, I see 10KHz performance... is there a non AB amp that does not have raising thd over 10KHz?

It's kinda funny, isn't it? Normal adults: can hear precisely nothing up there at 20kHz but worry about it. 12-14 year olds: can probably still hear it but worry about anything but that. :D

The highest to realistically worry about in the distortion graph is the 5kHz one. And it's super duper low.

Why does thd over 10KHz matter?
Maybe because we can hear above 10KHz? Maybe because that could explain why so many people find class-d sounding bad? Maybe because music peaks go well above 95 dB? I don't know.
 
And hidden pretty far down in that piece: "To be fair, the harmonic content of the 39 dB SPL distortion is closely related to the content of the music and it should be much harder to hear than the noise produced by the 39 dB dishwasher. It will also be much less than the distortion produced by the speakers."

Silly comparison. Would you hear a dishwasher at a heavy metal concert?

We can hear above 10 KHz, but not above 20 kHz where the first distortion products appear. Please provide the source for your claim that many people find class-d sounding bad.

Not sure what relevance the peaks going above 95 dB (SPL, I assume?) has to this.

I am definitely enjoying my Benchmark DAC 3B + Benchmark LA4 + Buckeye 1ET9040BA mono blocks. Before Purifi class D amps, for 20 years I have enjoyed pair of Quad 909s (low powered class A + high powered class AB design, where feed-forward switched between class A within crossover region, and class AB outside of crossover region). Before Quad I had Rotel 1090 class AB beast.

I can tell that these Purifi 1ED9040BA class D monoblocks sound cleaner, more relaxed, transparent, having virtually unlimited power, with no danger of clipping, each delivering 40A of current … than both of those traditional amplifiers. For affordable 2600$ usd. Yes some class D can sound harsh and many class AB sound harsh too. Not Purifi and Hypex class D though.
 
You notice that in this article Benchmark exposes deficiencies in most “high end” traditional amplifiers, while they actually have recognized PS Audio ICE board based class D as the one closest to their Benchmark AHB2 in terms of distortion performance? And Purifi is considered more state of the art than ICE. Just saying.

Because the nerdy point of view for visual clues just can't unsee the nice charts some amps do (usually class AB ones, but others too like the Topping class B, etc) .

It's the far-right side of objectivity based solely on measurements. A Halcro Eclipse mono is the holy grail for example.

Ah yes, 10KHz+ distortion does not matter. Having 39dB of distortion baked into 110dB peaks does not matter. The cope is real :facepalm:

I'm about to pull the grigger on Benchmark AHB2, unless there is a more powerful but similar measuring alternative.

That sounds good, what company did you buy those Purifi's from? Thanks!

Edit: I just noticed it's Buckeye. Do you think Apollon products are better measurement/power wise?

I believe you. /s That's why I keep going back to using class AB amps, I gave opportunity to so many class-d amps, always sounded weird, bass dry, no air around instruments, no soundstage that envelops, no bloom. Must be because we cannot notice 39dB of distortion baked into sound. :facepalm:

I took out and connected a Trends TA10 amp with its Tripath TA2024 chip the other day, that thing does sound magical. Alas, only 5W.

Your subjective perception is noted, but to me, it sounds like the opinion of someone used to distortion and coloration when listening to a transparent amp.

What, in your view, makes an amp sound "magical", and is that better than accurate and transparent?

If you want near Purifi-grade measurements but also frequency independent distortion figures with gobs of power there's also Mcintosh for a higher price:

You keep coming back to it and listen to the music more and more. You're outside of home thinking "daymn, I want to go back and listen to my music."

You keep being in wonder how good everything sounds, you're involved with the music. It flows and envelops you, you want to hear it louder and louder.

With class-d that never happens, it's always "hm, what's wrong with this, why is it so strange sounding?" "This sounds hard/harsh, it's boring."

Only one class-d peaked my interest, FOSI BT20a PRO with 35V/5A PSU. Using 48V/10A PSU made it sound closed/boring/unnatural again.

I have it now permanently connected to one of my speakers with the lesser 35V PSU.

All my amps and DAC's are very very low on distortion and coloration but dying out of age.
