Buchardt E50

I look forward to some objective measurements and subjective reviews too. Measurement wise, no surprise if they brand has a "house sound" as so many do. At over 4k USD, there's a lot of great choices. "On paper" looks like a great performer, and build quality appears top shelf.

Agree. I mentioned in an earlier post that I fully support “house sounds” as long as the directivity is well designed to allow EQ and to give predictable in-room response and consistency room to room.

Hi All! happy to see that there are some discussion about our new E50 speakers in here. Regarding the talk about the stained black might be veneer since it does not have the finger joints? It's still solid wood, all of them are and will be for future finishes as well. If you do not like the finger joints, we can just make a pair for you without them, we build them in our own production, so we do have a ton of flexibility here :)

Regarding measurements of them, this is where I would have to disappoint properly all on ASR. We would have a pair shipped to Erin for testing soon, but we have with this speaker let the subjective judgment win over the objective. This is very different from many of our other designs, but if you decide your equipment from an objective standpoint (which makes sense to do), then you would want the active version of this that we would make as well. If we get so much hate for taking a different approach with this design, we can always release the first crossover we made for is which I would attached measurement of here so you can see we are not completely incompetent in doing designs :D There are a ton of reasons why we went in a another direction with this design, which we would release a larger paper on later. The measurement you see here is a rather easy and simple 4. order. Although it's not perfect by any means, it's the best we could do with the given design which also had to look nice, we also had designs with oval waveguides to get drivers closer, but we did not take that far as it looked ugly to me. We ended up with a design that used 1. order on the Purifi and 3. order on the SS tweeter should you be interested.

this does not mean that all passive future products from us would measure like crap now, we would in our cheaper series still develop with objective data driven designs, while still having something that looks good.

Sorry to disappoint ASR on this one, but I hope that some of you would get to listen to them one day anyways, they do sound rather fantastic despite being a little colored :)
Take care.
If there is an active of these gorgeous looking speakers with measurements and SPL matching at Neumann KH150 or KH420 then Im all in and probably will change the speaker industry for ever.

Looking forward to the Actives of E50.

It would be a clean solution, though I'm not sure why it will "change the speaker industry forever"?
For three years there have already been very good Purifi bookshelf speakers only requiring a relatively small amplifier box.
Perhaps there is more customisation for making your own sound. 20Hz maybe. But still volume limited similar to existing buchardt actives.

According to Mads they sacrificed extension to a certain degree. Bummer. I was hoping it would play near full range at levels higher than the A10 can, similar to what the March Audios deliver.

I would expect a few complaints years from now when the the wood panels start to split or warp, especially in higher humidy environments.

My solid wood Sointuva AWG have been with me for 1+ year now and they look and sound like new. And they are in São Paulo, Brazil which is quite warm and humid.

The whole "solid wood" thing a couple of these companies are doing (Dutch & Dutch, Burchardt) are just terrible ideas. Absolutely pointless too.

D&D aren’t solid wood, the relatively thin outer is oak.

I didn't know that. I see now that there is baltic birch inside the speaker. 20mm of solid wood is not trivial though. If it cracks it probably won't affect much other than the aesthetics.

I wouldn't say it would absolutely happen, but the odds of it happening are a magnitude higher than using MDF/HDF. Wood choice, curing and treatment all make a big difference.

Also, let's talk about the potential resonances of solid wood usage. Proper bracing and dampening would certainly help here, but add costs to production. There're reasons why the industry predominantly use MDF/HDF materials.

The use of solid wood is for an aesthetic that isn't really available with those other materials.

A review!
Summary of the review:
Neutral to very slightly bright balance
Slight 50Hz emphasis
Excellent sound staging
Very extended bass
Highly revealing treble
Plays very loud
Compared to S400mk2, less midrange warmth, bass not as linear, treble a bit more emphasised, more “air and space” in the treble presentation, larger and more layered soundstage, plays louder.

Sounds to me like they blended the bass of the S400mk1 with the treble detail of the S400mk2 and dialed it all up a notch.

Looking forward to seeing the measurements for the E50.

I’ve been watching and reading all I can on the Arendal 1528 bookshelf and montor speakers. The chap who reviewed the monitors made an interesting anf entirely subjective comment about how he he felt that Focal Kanta 1’s, whilst not having the same dynamic range or technical ability had, for him, better cohesive and even more revealing mid range. I’ve listened to the focal Kanta’s and for me they felt too laid back. It reminded me of Naim and the reputation for delivering on ‘Pace, rhythm and timing”.

Sometimes something that on paper is close to perfect can fail to engage us musically. I wandered about how I would compare the E50’s with the 1528’s from this standpoint.

The difficulty is both are bought direct from manufacturer which makes experiencing and comparing them both very difficult!

any thoughts?

I guess either wait for measurements and try to estimate how it could sound, or buy both and compare :)

I've had Sonus faber speakers (Electa Amators) for over 40 years - solid wood, absolutely no cracking or deformation. I have no hesitation in ordering the E50 for that reason! Just like wood furniture, if well made it will last forever.
