Buchardt E50 speakers

the claim that the two configurations are electrically identical is false.
I continue to disagree, but will not press it further. Readers can evaluate the arguments for themselves.

EDIT: I've changed my mind ... I now think there is an electrical difference, assuming jumpers between terminals are removed.

Of course it is a tiny effect as long as cable resistance is low.

Regarding the repeatedly mentioned “2 kHz dip,” I would like to briefly clarify my own measurements.

All measurements were taken at the listening position using REW (SPL & Phase, 1/12 octave smoothing), under consistent conditions and in an acoustically treated room (bass traps, absorbers, controlled early reflections). The microphone was positioned at ear height at the primary listening seat.

In my measurements, there is no distinct local dip in the 1.8–2.5 kHz region. The response shows a smooth, gently downward-sloping trend starting around 1 kHz (a typical house-curve characteristic), but no isolated several-dB depression relative to the surrounding midrange.

A true 2 kHz dip would appear as a clearly defined notch compared to adjacent frequencies. That is not visible in my data.

Since this frequency range is highly sensitive to listening distance, microphone height, and floor/ceiling interference effects, different setups can certainly produce different results. However, in my treated room and at my listening position, the often-mentioned presence dip cannot be confirmed.

Subjectively, I also do not perceive recessed or hollow-sounding vocals; midrange reproduction appears stable and natural.

I simply wanted to provide this clarification for completeness.

Just thought I should mention that despite my complaints about the magic cables, I ended up buying a pair of the E50s.

I really like the look of the speakers in natural oak and tend to eq down the ca. 2 kHz region anyway, so I decided these were the speakers for me, despite a bit of snake oil. Also better availability than AsciLab. ;) (I'm honestly happy for the makers that they sell so well!)
And if the magic is real and improves the sound, well, I'll take it! :p

Anyway, I like how they look in my room and really enjoy the sound. Been some time sinceI had speakers where I didn't start second guessing my choice soon after the return period ended, but after two months I'm still happy and not coveting other peoples speakers.
 
First, I don't consider myself a golden-eared audiophile. I have a brother-in-law who is much more attuned to the ins and outs of music playback. He has a decidedly more expensive system than mine. But I know what I like. I owned a pair of ads L1230s for 40 years and would still have them if they didn't break down. My best friend at the time and I would audition speakers to our hearts' content back in the day when there were great stereo shops. He was a big fan of B&W while I went for the ads floor standers.

I tried numerous speakers after doing everything I could to repair the ads pair. In fact, I gave a long in-home trial to a pair of B&W 702 S2s. A long weekend with Totem Tribe towers. Bought a pair of Zu Dirty Weekend 6s. Returned them just before the end of the trial period. Wound up getting a pair of the og B&W 705 bookshelf speakers for not much $. Liked them but got them kind of as a place keeper. Couldn't continue to do sequential free trials. So much cogitation, hesitation, evaluation. So many articles read and videos watched. When the E50s were introduced, I almost instantly pre-ordered them. Finally, Buchardt was manufacturing speakers in Denmark. The waveguide carved into the solid wood cabinet spoke to me. Early in the trial period, I knew they were staying. They suited me psychologically, aesthetically, financially. After a short while, I stopped trying to constantly critique the sound quality. There was nothing to critique. Nothing bothersome. I don't perceive them as bright even pointed straight at me. There weren't any reviews when I bought them so had no idea about any measurements or mid-range scoop until much later. They just sound right to me. So I won't recommend them to anyone other than to give them a listen if they wish. The free trials that mads and zu offer are the next best thing to stereo shopping back in the 1980s. Better in terms of listening in your own environment. But worse in terms of having to repackage and ship very heavy Zu floor standers!

Wound up getting a pair of the og B&W 705 bookshelf speakers for not much $.
Those measure well (og version only).
When the E50s were introduced, I almost instantly pre-ordered them. ... They just sound right to me.
They measure well, and that midrange scoop is euphonic on many recordings (which is why it's there!)

Beside Erin, who else has measured them objectively? He didn't like the "house sound" they have with the mid range dip. It does seem a common approach from many manufacturers. I'd prefer flatter measuring and EQ to taste.

But would you? If you listened to them without the aid of measuring equipment or third party testing, would you dislike the sound? How can you say without having ever heard them? Would you notice the dip? I never have. I'm glad others say they measure well, that the dip is euphonic or not even there, but what difference does that make to me except to my ego? Perhaps you have the sensitivity of Erin who can hear dips and peaks of a db or three and discriminate exactly where along the frequency range those discrepancies lie. Who can tell that a speaker radiates at 50° or 60°.

I'm glad that there are measurements especially for those who are doing the designing and engineering of the sound equipment. But are the measurements going to decide one's purchasing decisions or will one's own taste? If you're someone like Erin, the two are the same. I guess I'm happy that my own hearing is relatively limited.

I'm glad my taste lines up so well with measurements. Good for my ego. But what of the people who adore those poorly measuring speakers? I did watch a number of YouTube reviews about the Tribe towers and Dirty Weekend 6s. Very glowing. Which did lead to my purchase of the Zus but that only happened because they offer the trial period. Oh I did everything I could to get the sound where I needed it to be. Communicated with Zu extensively. Purchased footers. What I didn't do was buy a tube amplifier which is what many said are needed to enjoy zu speakers.

Danny from GR research offers an upgrade kit for the B&W 705s. He says they don't measure well. I'm definitely not paying $500 for an upgrade for speakers that cost me $800 especially because I don't hear what he is reporting. I didn't sell the 705s. Instead I have developed a second listening room for them. Love the design, the quality of the cabinet, the fact that they were manufactured in England. And they sound good too--to me.

Lot of circular logic in there. I may like them on hearing them, I may not. I do know traditionally, I don't like speakers with that "house sound." If anything, I tend to like speakers with a mild mid range bump, a more "forward" sound as they say. I do know a speaker with a smoother flatter in room response allows more flexibility to EQ to personal preferences, room effects, etc. Finally, my audio OCD will bother me if I know it's there, and likely some confirmation bias will have me sure I can hear it and reduce my enjoyment. I'm not good with a "well they sound good to me so I don't care of they don't measure great" approach. I'm just too analytical minded for that. I will find gear that measures well, sounds good to me, and is (subjectively) good value for $.

Circular logic? I'm not sure there was any logic to my reply. But my listening approach is definitely straightforward. I listen. If something bothers me, nags at me, leaves me less than satisfied, I return it. If I can listen and enjoy with my full self w/o any analytic concerns, I can keep it. So it's the lack of analysis that wins the day. You have a much more circuitous approach to listening with an ever present back and forth between your listening and your analysis with subjectivity only allowed when determining the price! Just goes to show that stereo fans don't lie along a simple spectrum from hard of hearing to golden eared. Much more three dimensional.
 
They are a mystery ...
Ha! What mystifies me more are people who can listen to very distorted sound and not care. In fact, sit rapt, wrapped in pleasure. A friend loves opera and insisted I give it a try. So we went to the Cinemark theater where an opera was being streamed. The sound system was awful. I wouldn't have enjoyed a Pink Floyd concert given that sound system. But, she was delighted. Didn't notice any distortion. Thought it sounded great. I won't go to the BOK theater here in Tulsa for concerts after seeing the Chicks a number of years ago. Every time Natalie Maines hit a certain part of her register, there was clearly audible distortion. Obviously, hundreds of thousands of people go to concerts there and return for more. On the plus side, now that I went to see an opera with my friend and didn't enjoy it, I don't have to go to another!
