Broke my right wrist, the good arm. Any ideas how long this breakage goes on?

Things are moving pretty fast here.

NOTE to self: If I break a limb in the future, I must remember to lie to the EMTs about needing urgent surgery [ummm... I dunno... I am about to go on a UN diplomatic mission to Zimbabwe, within a month?;)] and keep that lie going to get 'er done pronto.

dr had x-ray images made and decided I am going in for surgery next week for the broken radius. I'm in a half cast right now...
Damn-sorry but typically will heal faster and with better alignment than w/o surgery.

I'm wondering if they break it again and then align it? That sounds like more pain. Lol... :D Titanium is coming...
fentanyl and versed is a killer combo-you won't remember a thing...

Here in Wisconsin, for plate-and-screw ORIF, an orthopod would typically operate under general anesthesia. Are we old fashioned?

A plexus anaesthesia of plexus brachialis will affect the whole arm, so semi-local but non general.
And if fracture is well stabilised one can go without a cast after 10 to 14 days, giving way to physiotherapy.

~9pm on the 15th I broke my wrist when I tripped on something behind me and extended my arm to block the fall. SNAP! I broke my shoulder going over the bars of my dirtbike and that made me vomit from pain but this wrist is a different aching pain when it happened. I'm in a big cast to the fingers and elbow, ate some tylenol X-strength and Advil X-strength, the cannabis feels like relief from pressure too. Watching lotsa bushcraft and catfishing videos and keeping my mind clear. Emergency nurse advised 6 weeks for this to end. Is that about right? That fentanyl they gave me before sedation and reduction was veryyyyy welcomed. It took 11.5 hours in emergency. I may just get bored and learn to type with my left hand...lol. :D Having a sense of humor about this but it's pretty serious for living alone. :D There was a big bump sticking out where the broken stuff and the joint had separated and stayed that way until they put me out and aligned everything. I heard word of a forked break compound fracture.
Sad and of course damn annoying when that happens, but that's life and as usual you have to say: It could have been worse.

While you recover, listen to music and watch some good movies/series and just take it easy.:)

@Doodski, how's it all going mate, on the mend?

I'm awaiting scheduling for surgery... a plate and screws are going to be used to keep the radius bone in alignment.... They have slipped and the mending break is not in alignment.

Was in for surgery this morning and I was able to opt for the semi unconscious method and that resulted in me being released in the afternoon. Arm is frozen but the pain is starting so I took pain meds as prescribed and tylenol with advil and antibiotics. I now have a stainless steel plate and screws.

So is the plan to remove those in a few months? That is what they did when my father had similar situation.

weird. i recently spent two weeks in Italy with my girlfriend. on our first full day (sep 17), she fell and broke her wrist. only got the xrays confirming the fracture yesterday. yes, she's a trooper! and she's been told 6-8 weeks in a hard cast following surgery (next week). will probably keep her away from her job (dental hygienist) for the rest of the year. the doctor also mentioned the possibility of removing the (soon to be installed) plate somewhere down the line.

Stainless and not titanium? I only ask because son #1 suffered a burst fracture in his spine the night he finished his last presentation for his undergraduate degrees and he has titanium plates, rods, and screws in his back. But this was in 2005. And perhaps the location determines the material?

In any case, the very best of luck for a speedy recovery and minimal pain.

I had the same question as I would have expected titanium for something permanent.

I am also a little bit worried about future possibility of MRI diagnosis on you for any objective/reason.

Usually titanium (and titanium alloys) are safe in MRI imaging, but stainless steel is usually categorized as ”contraindications" for MRI...
