Then there's the Altec 9848A. A TMM made with 288s on 511Es:

Note that Altec had figured out to cross the horn at 700Hz vs 500Hz.

ooooh! :)

Think the OP could find and score a pair of those for less than $10k?
They'd be pretty darned satisfying to listen to, I would think.

I am chagrined to admit publicly that I did not know that there was a 511 morph with a 1.4 inch throat?!
... and two x 411 woofers... how interesting. :)

A pair of those would be tonnes of fun!
(again, tryin' to stay at least sort of on topic for this thread!) :)

Dunno. Most audiophiles pointedly ignore the Altec studio monitors, so maybe the price is reasonable. They still need a higher-order crossover, but now I'm just quibbling ;)

I'd be sorely tempted to go active with them.
I do like the 288 family. Cannot afford a pair, but I do like 'em.

To this day they make "5 best compression drivers of all time" lists. Having heard a few, I can understand that. My TAD TD-2002s capture the sound, but aren't quite vintage. Yet...

I would go for Marten Oscar Trio. Beautiful sound, nice understated style and high manufacturing quality.

I look forward to the OP revealing the reason for his strangely posed question “tell me which speaker YOU covet but it has to be based on specific criteria that I like.”

Or: what’s your favourite pizza? Make sure your answer includes double cheese, pineapple with anchovies

Can I pick the pineapple off?

It is a bit mysterious and very open-ended. However, also a good excuse to post cool old speakers.

If I had $20k disposable to spend on speakers, I'd want to at least seriously audition the following, in my home listening space:

Dutch & Dutch 8C
Genelec 1235A and 8361A
Neumann KH420
Sigberg Manta
Mesanovic RTM10
Kii Three
GGNTKT M2
Philharmonic BMR HT Tower
Focal Sopra 2
Magico A5
KEF LS60

And of course the KEF Reference 5.

TAD2404. Although it's tough to actually find them.

No doubt the TAD's were great speakers and the woodwork makes them really beautiful.
But I believe the sound quality can be equaled if not bettered by a number of similar but
modern JBL designs.
YMMV

Sorry I veered off the ASR for a few days. The sound labs I still want to hear. My mentor loved them.
Now I have to remember where my mind was when I posted this. AHHH. A week ago I heard the Franco Serblin
Essence speakers and found them to be pretty darn good. Why I posted this exactly I can't truly recall.
I did hope to see some unknowns come up. Which happened so-Thanks!
