I am wanting to upgrade my desktop system. I am currently running a USB input (from a Windows PC) into a Daniel Hertz preamp. From there to a tiny pair of Bowers & Wilkins powered desktop speakers. My initial thought is to get the Adam Audio T5Vs or Adam Audio A7V monitors. However the A7Vs are similar in size to a pair of Spendor D1 Bookshelf speakers. So my question is: how much downside would there be to using the bookshelf / standmount speakers?

The upsides would be (1) cost - I already have the Spendors; and (2) The Spendors look cool with a nice Macassar ebony finish, while the Adams have an industrial appearance.

There's no reason not to use passive bookshelf speakers instead of active monitors. There are almost as many good ones in either camp. However, you do not mention a power amp, which the passives would need and play the Spendors before moving on. Instead of Adams, which I find sound too bright, I would lean to Genelec, like the 8030s if they meet your budget.
