Bob Dylan Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

yes, my wife told me last week, what a surprise, too bad I never really took a shine to his stuff but she likes it. I know, color me abnormal, I do like a few of his songs, but am not one for a lot of his folk music style stuff.

Most of my friends think this is a complete joke. The Nobel committee seem to be intent on making fools of themselves.

BTW, I would like to congratulate Kanye West for his upcoming 2017 prize in Literature. Or perhaps the Nobel prize for Chemistry can go to Heston Blumenthal. And the Nobel prize for Peace can go to Al-Shabaab.

Plagiarism - I did not know they offered a Nobel for plagiarism.
At least Dylan has been consistent with his extensive plagiarism during his career.
50+ years starting with stealing from Wood Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Hank Snow, etc., etc. up till the present.

iridium.

Maybe he got a new phone and can't figure out how to answer calls yet.

Maybe Frank Zappa will get it posthumously some year?

Nope...

Posthumous Nobel Prizes
From 1974, the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation stipulate that a Prize cannot be awarded posthumously, unless death has occurred after the announcement of the Nobel Prize. Before 1974, the Nobel Prize has only been awarded posthumously twice: to Dag Hammarskjöld (Nobel Peace Prize 1961) and Erik Axel Karlfeldt (Nobel Prize in Literature 1931).

Following the 2011 announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, it was discovered that one of the Medicine Laureates, Ralph Steinman, had passed away three days earlier. The Board of the Nobel Foundation examined the statutes, and an interpretation of the purpose of the rule above led to the conclusion that Ralph Steinman should continue to remain a Nobel Laureate, as the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet had announced the 2011 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine without knowing of his death.

As for declining the award:

Two Nobel Laureates Declined the Prize

Jean-Paul Sartre, awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, declined the prize because he had consistently declined all official honours.

Le Duc Tho, awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. They were awarded the Prize for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord. Le Doc Tho said that he was not in a position to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, citing the situation in Vietnam as his reason.

The illiterates should consider taking a little responsibility for improving their own plight.

I've got a new word!

The Illiterati...

Rats.

It's not a new word, but maybe my use of it is.

Nice sample usage:

  • ‘Welcome to the world of the illiterati, where ignorance is indeed bliss, where being a moron is somehow classed as being 'cute'.’

A lifelong Bob Dylan fan and canon collector, I just discovered his 2020 album "Rough and Rowdy Ways".
It's.. quite good.

Never got the hype around this guy…?

An appalling voice, largely unintelligible.

Some clever/ish lyrics from time to time but no more so than many others.

Nobel Prize standard… really?

We used to dive for the car radio buttons to change the station, when Dylan-downer music came on.
Homage must be due to Dylan, as many artists insist they have been influenced greatly by Dylan!

I mean, if Swedish enjoy Dylan' music enough to have magazines in his honor... how uplifting could his music really be?
