Lots of people all over the forumsphere thought Bluetooth 5 with it's emphasis on BT LE would also bring such benefits to wireless audio devices. BT LowEnergy existed since Bluetooth 4.2, so that was never the issue. It was mostly used for other things like sending files or messages. Until now, it seems the BT group wants to make use of the LE spec and include an audio codec to take advantage.
I'm personally spekptical of what sort of battery gains could be had from this approach, but I suppose the codec simply allows for lower bit rates while maintaining percievable quality. Not aware of any tests between streaming bit-rate energy use, interesting nonetheless, seeing as attention to audio grows a bit more.
