Given my handle here you might expect me to recommend Blues For Allah, but I won't bother. (It is a good album though.)

Ten pages is a little much to catch up on, but I do hope someone mentioned Tab Benoit.

Edit: Almost forgot this one!

My audio enthusiast past led me down a Fraudioquest path, even to their short-lived record label, complete with ‘heavy vinyl audiophile pressings.’ Most was schlock, but it did lead me to blues vocalist/guitarist Terry Evans. Before this, he was Bobby King’s vocal partner, and was in guitarist Ry Cooder’s band. Here’s 2 nice albums.

Allmusic: “Evans proves that he's one of the most underrated vocalists on the blues/roots scene. Growling, humming, and testifying through an album primarily comprised of originals, Evans is in terrific voice. Much of the material sounds like it could have been on a mid-'70s Cooder release, but the singer adds additional vocal bite to this rootsy material.”

This was his 2nd of ~11 albums as a leader, from 1994-2012. Ry Cooder and his band, with Jim Keltner on drums, provide the backing.

Terry’s 5th album, from 2001, is also nice. Allmusic: “Recorded primarily live in the studio in only four days with his longtime backing musicians, Mississippi Magic is a rollicking example of Evans' uncut, non-commercialized, gritty gospel and swamp vocals.”

Funky like something I'd expect to hear on stage at Le Bon Temps on Magazine Street!

Blues guitarist/singer/songwriter John Campbell secured a record contract well into a career, recorded 2 well-received albums, and promptly died at 41 in 1993.

Allmusic: “It's a deeply atmospheric record full of subtle shimmering organs and warm guitar textures that accent the dreamy spooky side of the blues more than the crunchy stomp and roll that Campbell was known for in the clubs -- and displayed on his follow-up Howlin' MercyThese are beautiful songs, tempered in shadow and restraint while baring their teeth at all the right moments… This is a fine, fine debut.” From 1991.

Allmusic: “Howlin' Mercy was the last of two recordings for Elektra, and is by far the heavier of the two… Campbell was a considerable slide guitarist whose… solos are wrangling, loose, and shambolic; they are undeniably dark and heavy… If ever there were a Delta blues record that visited the Texas roadhouse and settled on the street corners of NYC, this is it.” From 1993.

He actually had one earlier album. He was playing in Germany when bluesman Ronnie Earl heard him and cut a one-off with him in 1988, with the help of Earl’s Broadcasters band on a few tunes. It won John a W.C. Handy Blues Award Nomination in ‘89, but was not released in the USA until after his death.

BluesRockReview: “Blues Without You is truly an incredible record and should become a record that blues enthusiasts listen to and talk about for years.” From 2022.

Larry McCray put out a few well received albums in the 90s, and then went a bit off the radar. This album is a 30 year labor of love. Resurrected somewhat with the help of guitarist Joe Bonamassa, the album features Joe and Josh Smith on guitar, Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame member Reese Wynans on keys, Travis Carlton on bass, Lamar Carter on drums, and horn and string arrangements composed by Calvin Turner.

This is Larry’s ~10th album since 1990.

A blues-rock corker from 2022. Guitarist Anthony Gomes has recorded since 1998, and this is his ~13th studio album. The first video is an official video for the new album. Anthony made 8 live-in-studio videos for the album.

Allmusic: “While the extraordinary fiddler Vassar Clements is known for his countless recordings in the world of bluegrass and country music, he's also a convincing blues interpreter. He is matched with a wide-ranging group of musicians and… his playing takes on an almost conversational tone throughout a good part of these sessions, while he is obviously having a rollicking good time with his fellow players, no matter the setting.” Guests include slide guitarist Roy Rogers, harmonicists Norton Buffalo and Charlie Musselwhite, vocalist Maria Muldaur, and Elvin Bishop.

This 2004 album was issued late in Clements’ career of >30 albums from 1970-2005, and is probably a compilation of earlier sessions. Vassar’s 1974 album Hillbilly Jazz was recommended in the Americana, and Jazz, music threads.
