Personally I wouldn't bother with a portable unit. They are terribly inefficient and ineffective (especially in an average sized room - 12x12ft for example).
And most draw 1kW constantly, because they never cool the room sufficiently to a point where the compressor can cycle.
And the noise... THE NOISE!!!
I speak from experience, having tried them in various sized rooms, keeping the 'exhaust' pipe as short as possible (the pipe itself radiates a lot of heat) and routing outside through a hole in the wall (and other various ideas).
Just buy a decent fan - I bought a decent (and very quiet) Challenge fan from Argos last year - can't seem to find it on their site now though.
