Bloody Heat!

In the UK, most people are crammed into shoeboxes (Clark's Shoes, I think were a big brand, with sturdy lids and tissue inside) and no ability to affect design (I say 'design' but it's more of a collective social punishment) nor any space to have overhanging roofs! :)
In the Netherlands we have about twice the floor space compared to the European average, and many houses are modern.

I had an Idylis for probably 10 years and was still going strong when I gave it away. I guess that is why they dont make them anymore.
 
Personally I wouldn't bother with a portable unit. They are terribly inefficient and ineffective (especially in an average sized room - 12x12ft for example).
And most draw 1kW constantly, because they never cool the room sufficiently to a point where the compressor can cycle.

And the noise... THE NOISE!!!

I speak from experience, having tried them in various sized rooms, keeping the 'exhaust' pipe as short as possible (the pipe itself radiates a lot of heat) and routing outside through a hole in the wall (and other various ideas).

Just buy a decent fan - I bought a decent (and very quiet) Challenge fan from Argos last year - can't seem to find it on their site now though.

That's true for almost all portable units, but less so for the PortaSplit. That one is decently quiet and almost as efficient (SEER 6.1 vs around 7-8 for permanent installs). You also don't have the hot air duct with that design.

When buying a fan today, I would always get a DC fan - they are so, so much quieter! My pedestal DC fan is essentially inaudible from 2 m up to speed level 4 of 8. Absolutely no comparison to the old three-bladed ones humming away with an AC motor.
 
Don't house in the UK have Air source heat pumps? Or maybe it's not that common? It's possible to get them to pump in heat as well as cool air. Such a pump is an alternative if you live where it's fairly cold in the winter and you only have direct electric heating. You quickly save the cost of purchasing and installing one.

An air source heat pump (ASHP), the most common type of heat pump, can absorb energy (heat) sourced from cold ambient air outside a building, and release the energy at a higher temperature to heat the building, either via hot air or hot water. Electricity powers the mechanical pump (compressor), the used electric energy providing typically 3 or 4 times more pumped thermal energy than simple resistive Joule heating.

If you are thinking about buying one, think about...And the noise... THE NOISE!!! as @audio_tony said (not about this type of pump but still). They have become quieter over the years, I should mention.

In Germany these are all the rage atm:

The noisy unit ist outside (the window or on the balcony) and the hose is very narrow.
Btw. there are other manufacturers too.
My memories of my parents' ASHP were that it could be heard indoors too. Of course, mainly in the room it was installed in.An ASHP also has a fan for the indoor part that sucks in indoor air and blows it over the heat pump's element (for heating or cooling) and then spreads that air out into the room.

BUT with that said, I'm talking about a pump from around over twenty years ago. I suspect they have become much quieter over the years. The level of noise is probably stated in its technical specification.

It doesn't have to be a Nordic winter cold for it to be worthwhile to invest in an ASHP. Just take the electricity bills and the calculator. Calculate and see when the pay off happens.

I suspect that many people with houses are now investing in solar panels though. But still.

A portable split vs. a normal monoblock ac:
You can definately hear it. But at around 38-39 dB on silent mode, it's still quite quiet. (according to the video.
I personally have been using a De'Longhi Pinguino for about 14 years)

This comparison is kinda fake: He's running the monoblock at 100% (because with the exception of one Bosch unit, none of them can modulate their compressor - it's fully on or it's off) and the PortaSplit at 20%, which is possible because it does have an inverter. The PortaSplit will deliver more peak cooling power than that cheap Klarstein thing, so it is somewhat fair to not run it at 100%, but 20% is way too low. This is some partially dishonest influencer marketing, I think.

Our solar panels have been 166 degrees today! Don't think I'll climb on the roof and touch them!

I don't want to defend the video, but for many it's only crucial whether the device—even if only on the lowest setting—has the potential to be very quiet. Especially for those who use the device in their bedroom. Other than that, I think you have a valid point.
 
A bit hifi-y guys!
Anybody recommend a decent mobile air conditioning unit, to get through this internal heat?

It's mobile, and it blows cold air (or at least it did a few days ago here in (above) Tampa.

Get it started and it will blow cold all afternoon. It had been running for 4 hours and 24 minutes here.

52.7 degrees in the vent, the high was 92 down on the ground.

Back at home, though, a big Central AC, for 2600sq ft of domicile..

Bought stock in the Electric Utility years ago, $50k ahead on the capital invested and the other customers pay the bill (the stock dividends pretty much covers it).

Choose a split unit if possible: Better efficiency and not as noisy as mono ACs.
I've got an Midea Portasplit "semi-permanently" installed in my apartment as the neighbours didn't allow a stationary split-ac ...
So far it's not yet put into action because in-room temperature is below 25°C. At full power, the air conditioner is quite loud (both indoors and out). However, my plan is to operate the unit in the quiet eco mode (max. 400 watts) and, at a later stage, power it using a small 800-watt "balcony power plant" (photovoltaic system). Of course, that won't be enough to cool down the entire apartment from, say, 30°C to 20°C. But during the last two summers, the temperature in my apartment never exceeded 27°C, and even a drop of just 3°C makes a huge difference to me...

Been out already! Walked into the town and bought two packs of Rocky biscuits from Bargain Buys.

No beaches anywhere near regrettably. In fact you couldn't pick anywhere else to live in the UK that's farther from a beach. 22.7C in my living room (that's about 75F for those who don't do metric) which is comfortable for me.
I used to live in Leamington - that's about 70 miles from any sea water, let alone a beach!
There are still cooler places that are not beaches to visit. Besides, most beaches fill up with emmets with SUVs and screaming kids! :)

Yes I think it's half term. My father used to say school holidays and bank holidays are the worst time to go anywhere.
 
@DavidEdwinAston I ordered a cheap 7000BTU unit from CPC (Farnell) yesterday to see how it goes. I paid £146, but it was listed as a deal on HotUKdeals and they've all gone now!


I'm planning to use the unit in my lounge to create a refuge from the heat. The lounge is already the coolest room in the house, it can be easily shut off from the rest of the house and there's a handy 150mm vent in the wall to use as an exhaust (which avoids the need to muck about with window kits).
 
Data is always fun to argue about.

Here's from a new install last year to a couple of days ago.

Summer heat just getting started well here, so adjusting the day/night temperatures for economical operation.

The hotter it is outside the warmer the inside can be set, and still feel cool when you walk in the door.

75 degrees 24 hours doesn't work.... See the last spike.
