The reason is because back then there wasn't enough medical advances to stop impingements on the pituitary gland that causes excessive growth hormone, which is what happened to this fella. With today's medicine and technology, such procedure it's considered fairly safe. So anyone with any sort of impingements, tumor, etc on the pituitary gland, a procedure through the nostril is performed with no cosmetic scaring to the face.
