Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro X Limited Edition Review

let them break in
Test results indicate that transducer break-in is a physical change in the suspension but this occurs very fast and the difference in frequency response due to break-in is miniscule and probably not even noticeable to the human ear.

I have the 1990s and then got these 770 Pro Xs for the same reason, isolation (for recording) and your assessment is spot on. I could have written this review, lol! I use an RME Babyface Pro FS interface in my studio and on the headphone channel of the software I do have an EQ that cuts the 8.5KHz harshness of the 1990s but it's too much for the 770 Pro X. I think I'll run the 770s stock for a while and let them break in, and just keep them a little sizzly since I don't mix with them. But the soundstage and detachable cable and confort are worth the price of admission. There is one thing I can't stand: the provided cables, both in memory and how tight the connector is. I ordered custom cables from Fog City Audio with real Neutrik connectors and when I switch headphones the mini XLR plug going either way is like butter.
I have been running them with Dekoni Elite Hybrid pads and it is as a fantastic pairing. I had these laying around because I tried them on the 1990s but I didn't like them on the 1990s. It made them much to thick sounding and stole the attack away from the presentation. They don't seem to have that effect on the 770 Pro X. The Elite Hybrid seems to flesh out the sound without taking away any of the goodness. I have not found an alternative pad that makes the 1990 better than the stock pads, but on the 770 Pro X I am going to say these pads are mandatory. I shop the b-stock section first at Dekoni fyi

View attachment 453689I had a fun experiment: installed DT 700 Pro X drivers, pads and foams to DT 770 Pro X. This can be done without any mods, as both headphones share the same internal parts, as well as the pad rings even though they are not needed with DT 770 Pro style pads. Both models also seem to have pretty similar cup structure, as with same parts they sound almost identical considering the difference in clamping force.

DT 700 Pro X pads alone are interesting as well, but with a hole between 2,5-4 kHz. By adding the thicker foam from DT 700 Pro X too, treble would line up with the harman target.

Did a comparable experiment with an used T70p. One of the Tesla drivers seemed to fail (volume fluctuations), a spare part is about 105 €, more than twice the amount for a Stellar 45 driver. Ordered two plus mounting rings and pads for the DT 700 pro x. Works fine.

Went to try out a pair of open backs at a local store. Long story short I liked closed backs more, and found the 770 Pro X LE to be sooo close to perfect for me. I did not however pull the trigger just yet...

What's the best Beyer closed back pair for the money, both for music, spoken word, and gaming? They will be used exclusively on windows 11, so I will indeed have access to a system-wide parametric EQ.

The MK1 DT1770 are on sale last I saw for $299 direct from them in the US.
That's crazy, I'm not in the US, but at that price? Even with the shipping costs and import fees, it may end up being worth it! Runner up would be 700 Pro X or 770 Pro X LE, depending on your tolerance towards V-shaped tonality, correct?

DT1770 probably has less headroom for EQ than 770 Pro X
Good catch, the newer drivers have lower distortion levels. 700 Pro X and 770 Pro X LE are essentially the same price, with the only meaningful differences between the two being their tuning, their earpad depth/comfort, and their carrying bag quality. I almost want to get the 770 simply because it's just got more bass and more treble, which sounds easier to tune. It EQ'd better with @oratory1990 as well: DT 700 Pro X | DT 770 Pro X LE
