I know when it comes to budget closed backs most people will reccomend the AKG 361 but I am curious what people think the best closed back is with EQ, purely from a sound perspective.

Let’s say under £200 as definition of “budget”.

The best value is the Hyperx Cloud Orbit S if you can get a pair used for under $150USD (100mm planar magnetic drivers by Audeze).
The AKG K371 wired is terrific, not the wireless version, those are tuned for battery life.
The new Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro X are good if you EQ them, they have potential, just not perfect out of the box.
The original 250 ohm DT770 is a favorite with me because they deliver on bass when a song calls for it, and the treble peak and be equalized down with any player.

If you can equalize by ear, the DT770 Pro X have a lot of potential, but I don't think measurements or frequency charts are out yet. The Cloud Orbit S with the default or flat EQ preset is also a lot of fun. That comes with an integrated amp/DAC and just needs a USB port available.

You mean AKG 371? I own it, use it with EQ as proposed by Amir (slightly modified though) and can't imagine a better closed headphone within this price bracket.

Tuned for battery life? How does that work? Why do it (if it is possible)?

There’s a 361 and a 371.

If you find any remain stock of Shure SRH440 non-A I recommend it for the sound, it trades blows with AKG K371 IMO.
