Went for an ear wax removal appointment this afternoon.

It is without doubt the most effective upgrade you can buy for your audio system - and only £60

My system sounds absolutely amazing tonight.

Same could be said when I brought some new glasses, the TV went from SD to 8K :)

Yes it really helps. My frequency response went Left from 8kHz to 11 and right from 11 to 13. Singers now aren't smeared anymore between the middle and the right speaker but only in the middle where they belong. However then my brain re-calibrated and I became extremely sensitive to sibilance which is waning just now after about a year and the listening pleasure fully returns.

I've occasionally had "plugged ears" but it was like 90% deafness in one ear and I had to go to Urgent Care to get my ears cleaned. Not subtle and VERY annoying. Now I make sure the doctor checks my ears during my annual physical. They are usually OK. And I don't think I've had that problem since I've been getting an annual physical and having them cleaned-out when needed.

Hmm. But did you do any double-blind testing with ear wax in versus out? ;)

But more seriously, does ear wax really build up to the point where it interferes with hearing under normal circumstances?

Some folk have issues that need attention but generally it’s not an issue for the majority of folk.

Thankfully my hearing is the only part of my body that’s not fu:oops:ked so a quick direct blast with a warm shower is my go to….for now anyway

Just halve of that buys you a 29.90 Superluxe ECM999 measuring mic for a ever lasting upgrade in combination with DSP.

It really brings out the highs doesn't it!

I think this brings up a very, very important point for audio "reviewers" and end consumers.

I'm just doing quick data analysis here so feel free to correct me.

ChatGPT says the median age of a USA consumer owning a hi-fi system of $10,000 USD or more is 58 years old.

It also says there is a steep rise in hearing loss starting at age 50 and reaching over 50% prevalence in those 70+.

Therefore I strongly feel that any audio reviewer (of any age) publishing any form of subjective audio impression should have formal hearing tests with an audiometrist and publish that data yearly to the reading public.

It will have no bearing on objective measurements but massive bearing on their subjective opinions, to the point of near invalidation in some of them.

Furthermore if you are near this age bracket and feel there is a problem with your hi-fi system, get your ears formally examined before investing in gear.

To start with the Audiophiliac

Does for me. It took 3 years this time, but in that time I went from clean lugholes to almost deaf in one ear. And significantly impaired in the other.

I've been having my ears cleaned out every 1 to 3 years for probably near 20 years.

It's amazing just after it is done - hearing the slightest sounds I was unaware of just before. Went to the bathroom last night - "whats that sound" oh, it's my trousers sliding down my legs :D

Interesting. Well thanks, now you've given me something else to fret about. Hope you're pleased with yourself! :p

LOL he is who I was envisioning writing my post. Steve looks like a really nice guy but he is certainly one who should be getting hearing tests and posting them regularly. His age and city noise pollution cannot be good for the ears.

+1 as you mention he is nice guy reason i'm looking to his video's is because he uses sometimes great music for his testing.

I've read that once you have it done the first time, you then have to keep on doing it every so often. I've no idea if that's medically correct but I'd be interested to know.

Yes, in most cases, the problem is not the technical measuring devices.

But I am surprised that you have to payed for it. In Germany, this is a service that every health insurance company covers (and everyone is in a health insurance company in Germany).

This varies from person to person.
It's like growing a beard.
It doesn't depend on the shaving itself, but some people simply have more beard than others.

I visited an ear doctor recently so to have a routine check of my hearing. I asked him to clean my ears as well and he replied that there was 0 wax to clean. I was surprised and asked him how this could be possible as last time I visited an ear doctor was like 25 years ago. And he replied what @Audionaut say. That it varies, and while some persons can have a lot, it can be completely not the case for some.

I use either a car key or a pen cap to clean out the wax. Just need to be careful and not jab in there too far. But my ears stay pretty clean.

My son once had his ears cleaned at the doctor and a whole bunch of nasty stuff came out. I bought him an ear cleaning kit for him but I don't know if he uses it. It came with liquid and some plastic screw like things to get the wax out. Don't remember the brand. Debrox maybe...
