These all bore repeat viewing for me, giving the double whammy of being so uncomfortably creep in first viewing but with enough depth and human interest for a well enjoyed follow up:
LTROI.JPG

Let the Right One In (Swedish 2008 original. If you see 1 movie from this list, this is it)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
28 Days later
30 Days of Night
The Ring (Asian original)
Get Out
The Babadook
The Shining
The Conjuring
It Follows
The Others

Comedy horrors that are too much fun:
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland
What We do in the Shadows
The Cabin in the Woods
The Evil Dead (1982)
Night of the Living Dead (1990)

+ 1 for "Let The Right One In".

The only horror film I ever saw that I would consider truly disturbing:

The Ring (2002)

I don't get the horror thing either really.

I would put Alien first. It Follows was pretty good I thought. Creature from the Black Lagoon when I was a kid and the Fly (Vincent Price version)

Many of these you folks have listed I've paid money to see, and been unhappy I wasted money on them. Like Halloween, the Cabin in the Woods, and Chucky. Yuck! Which is okay, I'm not a horror movie fan.

In the comedy horror genre I'd list Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 along with the Birds.

I generally avoid "horror".

However... there are exceptions...

It's about 1955, late night TV, and I can still hear my father yelling at me from his bedroom,
"Turn off those g--damn creature features and go to sleep!"
Still haven't lost my love of them. :D

That's the best scene, Ray Liotta eats his own brains. LOL

I'll avoid some of the great suggestions already made (The Witch and Neon Demon for example).

White Ribbon (2009) I want to say something just very quickly about this movie. It's mostly unlike anything in the modern era, in my opinion a masterpiece. Not brutality horror or anything like that, I think everyone simply desrves one day to watch this if they're past their teenage years.

Funny Games (2007) Same director, more grounded as we understand the genre of Horror

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest of these you can simply pick out at random, in no particular order some of my favorites.

VHS (2012)

Sinister (2012)

The Conspiracy (2012)

Starry Eyes (2014)

Wolf Creek (2005)

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

A Dark Song (2016)

The Conjuring (2013)

Let the Right One In (2008)

The House of the Devil (2009)

The Mist (2007)

It Follows (2015)

The Descent (2005)

Get Out (2017)

Hereditary (2018)

The Skin I Live In (2011)

Shutter Island (2010)

Event Horizon (1997)

Hounds of Love (2016)

Honeymoon (2014)

Kill List (2011)

The Crazies (2010)

The Woman (2011)

The Invitation (2015)

Creepy (2016)

The Wailing (2016)

Under the Skin (2013)

Annihilation (2018)

The Witch and Hereditary are two of my all time favorite horror flicks. I've been hearing great things about Midsommar as well; same director that did Hereditary.

Wow-- is that the monster from "It Conquered The World"? I have had an image of that in my head for twenty years because of the tune. It actually looks better than I imagined!

I have always thought that horror and heavy metal must be the two hardest things to do well, because 98% of what is out there is bad. This is a great list though, thanks! +1 for the new Halloween movie. They did a really great job on that. Don't think these have shown up yet:

Get Out
Suspiria (the original-- I think there is a remake?)
The Devil's Rejects
The Exorcist III (this is actually as good as the first one, believe it or not)
Berbarian Sound Studio
The Others
