Best Guitarists Evah!!!

The evidence supports your recollection, afaict. Diversity is a countermeasure. To my shame I cannot nominate anyone to best English guitar guitarist Evah!!! because I cannot name even one.

And not guitar, but:

I asked about English guitar guitarists, as in, players of the English guitar.
In that case, you're missing a hyphen. "English-guitar players" means players of the English guitar. "English guitar players" are guitar players who are from England. And yes, I am a royal pain in the arse at cocktail parties. :)

I don't even know what sort of music they were typically used for

All I know about English guitars is that they were a type of cittern mostly popular in Norway and Portugal where they evolved into the 'Portuguese Guitar' beloved of Fado practitioners. No idea what they were originally used for. Presumably for playing the popular tunes of the day (mid 18th C). Weren't they also called 'ladies guitars' or was that something else ...?

You correct peoples' punctuation at cocktail parties? My imagination is struggling.

OK, I'm completely immoderate about pre-WWII acoustic blues. A lot of the players weren't very technically sophisticated but could do a few things perfectly. Bo Carter was like that. He made up accompaniments for his songs. He wasn't a shredder but each note was carefully placed. He recorded a lot of "party" records. He's been called "the master of the single entendre." Here's one that isn't.

Excellent. Some blues players can be very smooth about adding as many beats to a bar as the song/vocalist needs. It doesn't upset the dancers. I'm so used to hearing rigid meters (99% of what I listen to is disco) that it feels different and I like that.

Only in grammatical emergencies.
Actually, no, I don't do that. Usually. :)

And may I say, a tip of the cap for your apostrophe edit. Unfortunately, you were right the first time. "People" is itself plural, so there's no need to move the apostrophe to the right, which is how you would turn a singular noun into a possessive plural. But we're not at a cocktail party. So never mind.

John Williams is Australian
I did not know that.
Probably should have cited Julian Bream, who did so much to revive the lute.
BTW, when I read Multicore's post, I did not realize he was referencing a specific instrument.

Wow! I'm not sure I could stomach 25 CDs of Fripp nowadays but some of it could be interesting to hear. The League of Gentlemen period was very good as far as I remember.
Well, I been and gone and done it and can tell you ... it's a lot. OMG it's a lot. About 100 hours of music total. Over 50 GiB ripped to FLAC(*). It's got
  • all the Frippertronics from 1977 to 1983 for all applications. All! It's insane. All of it recent digital master from the originals and some of it remixed,
  • 4 versions of Exposure including the previously unreleased original with Daryl Hall and a new remix, plus some alt takes and extras
  • new mix of The League of Gentlemen (superb!) plus 3 more CDs of live and Peel Session. The Indiscreet tracks and voice overdubs are all gone,
  • some of the above also in surround and in 24 bit 48 and 96k stereo.
That's it. Basically all the stuff that can go under his artist name between Sherborne and Discipline Crim.

Worth it? Yes, I think so. Let the Power Fall (which I now have in 24b96k to better represent the tape degeneration :) has probably been a greater influence on my own music making that anything else (still is). I loved LOG then and it sounds even better now (my 2020 homage). Exposure wasn't a big deal for me at the time but it's really interesting, as The Wire said "the Sgt. Pepper of avant punk." LOL, gotta love The Wire. I don't get to buy much physical music media these days so this super-deluxe set is a treat.

(*) Ripping the two Archive Blu-Rays to FLAC took some scripting, using the track listing in Discogs to match m2ts files to track title via duration.

Well, I been and gone and done it

Umm ... good luck! ;-)

I can see the expanded Exposure set is available on Spotify as well as some live Frippertronics stuff. I think that is enough for me for the time being. Perhaps the remastered LOG will turn up at some time ...

It's a work of ego-maniacal insanity that I recommend to nobody.

Thank you. I feel I have developed enough objective separation to handle it without much risk.

They pass notes back and forth to each other. ;)

Rick "OTOH, has been to cocktail parties where folks suggested better ways to word something every third sentence  " Denney

Hey! Less forehead slapping! Restating ideas in different language is an ancient and valuable discursive tool for exploring consensus and difference.

They pass notes back and forth to each other. ;)
I spent a while trying to imagine this punctuation-checking cocktail party with note passing and, well, I aint gonna host it.
