Best Guitarists Evah!!!

Naw, Jimi was pretty good at sticking his guitar into the amp and turning the Star Spangled Banner into a bunch of ear bleeding noise.
But David Gilmour knows how to use the strings to play actual notes and chords. JK Ya
OK watch this and tell me that Gilmour is better
The proof of Jimi being the best is that no one can play like him, until this day

There are some great guitarists in Africa and from Africa. Dave Matthews is from South Africa

Cheers! As it happens, I was just listening to this last night ... and yes big fan of Akchoté.
No way! Akchoté's ouevre, or perhaps his colossal corpus, is so big you could play one of his tunes an hour and not hit that particular one before you die.

Bennink is an inspiration too. Over on another thread we were talking about Out To Lunch! yesterday. While researching that I found video of him talking about what it was like in the band with Dolphy in .nl when he died.

So, when I think of "who's the GOAT of guitar playing?" my mind go towards lutists, who seem to produce a lot more notes with a lot less strain, not to mention a lot more nuance.
A lot more nuance, eh? Perhaps we understand this word not quite the same but I don't feel there's a shortage of nuance for example here

Deion Cho plays Sonata Homo Ludens No. 8 (2021) by Leo Brouwer

Perhaps what you mean my nuance is expression through an instrument that permits relatively little. The guitar has permits a good deal more drama, which Brouwer and Cho both clearly thrill in, and perhaps that's the opposite of nuance?

I know, I shared this video before in another thread. But I now have the book too and have the left hand figured. I may be able to play page one badly with a lot of work but the idea is really more to lay down some more tricks in muscle memory for use in improvisation.

There are some young new talents out there, too:

Came up in my Spotify suggestions ... but I have quite a few other Akchote things in my library already so perhaps not so surprising. And yes there's quite a lot of Bennink there too. It's a small world ... ;-)

In the interests of disrupting this SRV/Hendrix/Gilmore thing like Hawaii shirts around a grill disagreeing on chicken cooking methods...

Pavel Steidl - Hommage à Jimi Hendrix by Carlo Domeniconi

Take your pick between a studio recording and a noisy concert performance.

I recall Bandcamp offered a way to buy his discography in one go. I thought it would be a nice vote of confidence and the price per track sure worked out low. But it was all in Spotify as far as I could tell so I didn't. Now that I quit Spotify and need this offer, I can't find it. The idea of walking around with >10E+8 Noel Akchoté tunes on my phone is stupid enough to be quite appealing.

I think Bandcamp do those offers a couple of times a year. I've taken advantage of similar offers on other artists, although not with huge catalogues like Akchote's.

Yes, I was once this close to buying Merzbow's complete 50 CD Merzbox set for a very reasonable price. But I chickened out in the end ... ;-)

I remember being in RRRecords in Lowell with Sandy and Ron, aka Emil Beaulieau: America's Greatest Living Noise Artist, got the box down, unpacked it and showed us the content. Ron's opinion was that no record label should indulge an artist to permit such a grotesque thing. Given Ron's history with Merzbow, importing, publishing, supporting, and spreading Japanese noise culture in the USA, I didn't think it my place to disagree.

Speaking of woefully over-indulgent box sets and Since this is Best Guitarists Evah!!! and those guys are insisting on rock-n-roll, check out this one

Robert Fripp – Exposures: 25 CDs, 3 DVDs and 4 BluRays

Actually, now I really want this. I didn't know there was a Peel session of the League of Gentlemen.

Robert Fripp – Exposures: 25 CDs, 3 DVDs and 4 BluRays

Wow! I'm not sure I could stomach 25 CDs of Fripp nowadays but some of it could be interesting to hear. The League of Gentlemen period was very good as far as I remember. That was probably the first Fripp stuff I really cottoned on to aside from the KC Schizoid album.

Now that I quit Spotify and need this offer, I can't find it.

I was just browsing Bandcamp and I can see pretty much all of Akchoté's catalogue is downloadable for 'name your price' with no minimum. So have at it! There's at least a couple of hundred albums there ...
