I discovered it by chance, I fell madly in love with it. I find his technique incredible and innovative. If we then think that he is only 28 years old, you realize that he has a life ahead of him and can become a great in the same way as Pat Matheny or John Mclaughlin or Paco De Lucia or perhaps even more.
There are some songs that I find fantastic, even if he still has to find his way and a well-defined personality. But he is on the right path.
But the thing I like most is his extreme humility, dressing normally like any boy and not conforming to the fashions dictated by record marketing.

I started listening to rock a roll in the late 60’s. So i’am most influenced by the rock of the 70’s. In that vein no one could touch Alvin Lee, Carlos Santana, an Roy Buchanan. Really enjoyed this thread and as someone has mentioned prior it’s just who did it for YOU.
 
I’ve always been a fan of guitar based music, and any best of list pretty much takes in other aspects other than purely technical ability, mainly composing/songwriting ability and them actually making music you like, otherwise players like Guthrie Govan would be near the top of everyone’s list. I like Guthrie and my jaw drops at his ability but he’s nowhere near my top 10 because quite simply there’s lots of other guitar players that I much rather listen to.

3: Ritchie Blackmore.

These three have always been my top three and have produced many of the most brilliant, inventive, emotionally involving guitar parts ever recorded. The rest of my top ten is a bit more fluid so I will not order them but will include:

Micheal Schenker
Richard Thompson
Gary Moore
Slash

Rolling Stone has several lists that seem slightly dubious to this old guy. Other sites actually have Slash and Willie Nelson in the mix, while ignoring Carlos (Santana for for the Luddites in the crowd). During Neil's Ragged Glory/Arc/Weld phase I remember him referenced as "the world's worst great guitar player." ;)
 
Anyone mention Julian Lage above? Less pyrotechnics, but unbelievably fertile improvisation and brilliant musicianship (see also Guthrie and Matteo playing the same tune below)
