I have researched the best gaming headset for the past few days because I want to upgrade my current setup. I’ve read reviews on websites like RTINGS, IGN, TechRadar, and PC Gamer, and they consistently rate these two headsets as top choices:

JBL Quantum 400 - USB over-ear gaming headset
https://www.amazon.com/JBL-Quantum-400-Headphones-Game-Chat/dp/B084CZDX61/?th=1

SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless Gen 2 Gaming Headset
https://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Arctis-Wireless-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0FRNR8Y11/?th=1

However, I’m having trouble deciding which one would best suit my needs and would appreciate some expert advice.

I mainly play competitive FPS games (like Call of Duty, Valorant, and CS2), but I also enjoy RPGs and casual gaming. Good sound quality, accurate positional audio, a comfortable fit for long gaming sessions, and a clear microphone are very important to me. Wireless performance and battery life are also big factors, but I don’t want to compromise too much on audio quality.

So, which gaming headset would you recommend based on these needs? I’m also open to other suggestions if there’s a better option I may have missed.

Thanks in advance for your help!

never played any games so can’t help with your decision but I follow Joel at gadgetrytech for audio stuff, he’s also a gamer and has lots of gaming specific reviews

I'd rather you get the Cloud III S from HyperX

I’ve been using the Fractal Design Scape for longer gaming sessions, and overall it’s been a solid experience. Comfort is the main reason I’d recommend pairing it with the Caphras strap if you don’t have a larger head. Out of the box, the stock tuning is above average for a wireless gaming headset, but once I applied a bit of EQ, I genuinely started to prefer it over some more traditional closed-back headphones I’ve used, including the FT1.

From a sound perspective, the Audeze Maxwell is also very good. Sonically, the two are closer than you might expect. Both handle gaming and music well, with balanced tuning and good low-end control for a wireless design. Neither feels like a compromise for mixed use, which isn’t always true in this category.

Where the Scape stands out for me is usability and comfort over time. It’s noticeably lighter than the Maxwell, which makes a real difference during longer sessions. Clamp force is moderate, heat buildup is reasonable, and the overall weight distribution is better once adjusted properly. I’ve also grown to appreciate the wireless charging more than expected. It’s one of those features that doesn’t affect sound quality but improves day-to-day use enough that you miss it when it’s gone.

I would generally recommend avoiding brands like SteelSeries if sound quality is a priority. In direct comparison, both the Scape and the Maxwell are simply more refined wireless options, especially for anyone who also listens to music.

At this point, I’ve switched to the Fractal Design Scape as my daily wireless driver. The combination of lower weight, good tuning with EQ, and practical features makes it better for extended gaming sessions, even if the Maxwell still holds its own purely on sound.

Just use your hifi headphones and put a modmic or something on it if you like to talk.

Audeze Maxwells are weird. Weird fit, weird soundstaging. Really cool in one way but impossible to track sounds.

If soundstaging is important and isolation doesnt matter hd 800 do a great job.

If isolation is important I find my ether c flow do a great job with games and still has decent imaging despite its great isolation.

It has good bass but just for dynamics the fostex th900 do really well. Poor isolation and well its soundstaging is not that good either though.

But the budget on these are nuts. There is sure gaming headsets offering more bang for buck I just dont see the need to run gaming headsets for gaming

Astro A50 Gen 5 is the best one I know about from perusing measurements. I upgraded from Maxwell to it. Of course it does not sound excellent pre-EQ but it takes corrections no problem. It's lighter-weight, more comfortable, more leakage tolerance, has a better microphone, and sounds better to me (after EQ).

A50 X is the same headset as Gen 5 just different connectivify features for the base station.
