Let's stick to what the original poster said: "that provides the highest performance per dollar on a budget". Note that he already has a DAC.

Says he doesn't want to use the DAC for playing CDs.

Pretty much any CD player at any price will give 'The highest performance.' I'd suggest get a Technics or Sony second hand, maybe $50 tops.

I believe the fiio also has issues with gapless playback, but I'm reading it may have been fixed in V25, but certain firmware versions resolve one issue, and break another etc. I'd look into it more if that one is being considered. There seems to be similar reports with the Denon.

I don't know if lack of gapless is a common issue these days or if it has always been... I haven't owned a CD player since the early 00s.

EDIT: Upon searching around the Shanling CR60 claims gapless playback, but it's costly, and seems gimmicky.

Amazing, I can't read. The lack of gapless is only over USB according to that polish forum. That explains why the review on here says it does support gapless. Re. Denon DCD-900NE
