Diminishing returns fs but one-time splurge can be worth it ???

Ideally portable but if there's something much better desktop around 1-1.5kg could be preferable. AMP function optional as IEMs are very easy to drive.

market research until now,

portable dongles:

Moondrop Dawn Pro 2 (CS, $50 new) probably the best entry-level dongle, drives all IEM easy, very low noise floor

AFUL Iceborne (CS, $120ish brand new release) dongle also very good choice, sounds much fuller than Dawn Pro 2

Astell&Kern HC4 (AKM, used $100-150ish) dongle sounds very similar to the new HC5 ($400++), probably best dongle-size on market

portable mid-sized:

FiiO Q15 (AKM, used $150ish) total powerhouse, BT, desktop mode can drive most full cans, excellent sound but quite big and discontinued (too good?)

Questyle Sigma (AKM, used $200ish) has unique current Amp tech

Cayin RU9 (AKM + tube, used $250ish) very good with tube but quite big and battery lasts 4-5 hours max

iBasso DC-Elite (ROHM, used $250ish) considered one of the best portable DAC/AMPs

iBasso DC-Tonfa (R2R, $250ish brand new release) less 'technical' than Elite but more 'fun'

ifi idsd GR2 (Burr Brown, $400ish brand new release) lots of tech, K2HD, bluetooth, has everything though personally IFI dacs have disappointing sound

Cayin RU6, RU7 sounded disappointing too among many others

Quloos MUB5 (R2R, new $1500 lmao) accolades on head-fi but way too expensive and some rank it similar to iBasso DC-Elite

desktop (small size):

FiiO K13 R2R (used $150ish), many praise it but others say "fake R2R" ?

Topping Centaurus (R2R used $500ish), Holo Cyan 2 clone but cheaper?

What else? Can desktop units at $500-700 price range offer something significantly better than portables?

Quedlix 5K is a classic for a reason. Combins that with a Fiio KB1K to get a volume knob.

Others: Crinear Protocol Max, Fiio Snowsky Melody, the upcoming Quedlix 5K II

Qudelix 5K outdated. Most ESSabre I tried sounded terrible, maybe preference. AKM a lot better.
CrinearPM looks similar to entry-level Dawn Pro 2, dual CS DAC.

All DAC/AMPs in first post sound a lot better, looking for TOTL here not budget.
For example to rank them:

your recommendations < Cayin RU7 < Dawn Pro 2 < AFUL Iceborne < AK HC4 < HC5 < FiiO Q15 =? Sigma =? RU9 =? Elite =? Tonfa =? etc

there's audible difference in each step, better sound

Honest answer: for IEMs, no. A clean dongle (110+ dB SINAD, low Z-out, hiss-free) is audibly identical to a $700 desktop - you're paying for a knob, XLR and extra inputs, not sound. I'd skip the R2R detour too: most R2R DACs measure worse SINAD/THD than a decent delta-sigma, so the "smoother" thing is usually filter voicing or expectation. If the splurge has to go somewhere, put it into the IEMs themselves.

Definitely heard improved sound in each DAC step as ranked above. It's not all just measurements.

On the contrary about IEMs, tried Subtonic Storm - costs like $8000 and widely considered one of the #1 best IEM contender ever made, has long manufacture queue (year?), hard to find - and didn't really like it honestly.... I prefer mine. Mystery IEM!

Personally I was attracted by the title, rather than the subforum....but....can't imagine spending that much for headphone/iem amps even for high power speakers that's on the high end price wise.

it's actually worth it. from my 15 years experience switching DACs and headphones over time, very good DACs make a huge difference.

FiiO K7 (desktop small-ish) was spectacular, huge difference. big boom.
FiiO Q15 is kinda similar portable version. way better than the listed dongles even just for IEM (high end).
Qudelix was crap lol

most in the list are just around $200 (used) and top-end, can drive anything except the toughest Ohms.

I'll try to test most in stores when found, was just wondering if there's a real good top-end Desktop unit that can be found used at good discount

No. It is just the never ending human quest of thinking there is something better There is not, especially not for IEMs.
just get a device with good enough hiss rejection, low to near zero output impedance (so that low impedance IEMs are not negatively altered sonically) and aesthetics you like.

Overspending doesn't add anything other than the first weeks of dopamine that vanishes but hey it seems you're already planning to spend so that is your own choice you gotta make

ess is not outdated, everything measuriing 120 db sinad is ess so objectivly speaking AKM is outdated (avregase 110-115)

Sigma, topping g5, quedilx 5k, mojo 2(overpriced, but still great sinad), a n k hc4 (have one, not enough current),

nahhh theres definitely difference and rank

had mojo for a while sure was high-end, added stage but resold it

interesting because the favorite filter in HQPlayer is Sinc-L which emulates that

Sigma (not pro, AKM version) sounds lot better than AK HC4 ?

also best dacs to use with HQPlayer (definitely adds sound quality)? Maybe Desktop units are better on that? or R2R?

i would consider the astell kern kann series as best bang for buck players

You're chasing ghosts, likely due to testing incorrectly. Extremely common problem.

If you expect DACs to sound differently, you have come to the wrong forum
I'd suggest you to stay for a while, read and learn and finally be at peace for your DAC choice. But I'm afraid you are not getting the answer you're hoping for.

Can you point us to the specs and the prices?

Conversations like this always remind me of a joke a friend at work frequently used as a response to whatever flashy/trendy thing was commanding attention and money . . . "That's how you know something's better in America, it costs more!". ;)

well a true consumerist country but hey can't blame people. all they have are the "treats"

wait....... why there's so many DACs and constantly new ones? Are you saying that 99% of new products in that domain and the overall flood is just profiteering?

Why would iBasso release DC-Tonfa since they already make DC-Elite that is frequently ranked as one of #1 portable dac/amp ?
And the DC-Tonfa was made in collaboration with e-Earphones.jp , basically the most dedicated store/company for IEM/cans audiophile enthusiasts in the world.

from the thread you linked, quote:

"The DAC chips, themselves, act differently - for example, I've never been fond of ESS Sabre chips, but like Burr-Brown / TI. In addition, the output stage can make the resulting (i.e., analog) output sound COMPLETELY different, even if the initial digital conversion is identical."

I'm similarly not fond of ESS Sabre, and every implementation changes as well as AMPs used, even for IEMs which most are very easy to drive.

The comments I made on each tested DAC/AMP in my OP are true subjective experience and replicated every time I tested with elapsed time i.e. months or years later even. IEM Audiophiles also certainly remember specific sound signatures of certain unique IEMs, if they do blind testing they will definitely recognize certain ones.

There's definitely big differences, it's not all measurements at all. There's ESS Sabre devices that measure perfectly but don't as sound good to me with any EQ or filters etc. On the contrary AKM chips tend to sound really sweet and then there's the implementation parts and everything.

And mainly looking for portable setup because of travelling schedules, no set place to invest on proker speaker setup.

(not gonna comment on "costs more it's better / american consumerist culture" lmao..... even when small kid I could recognize there's better products at lower prices And top-end is price-gouged for that extra 3% perf or luxury packaging or whatever.
Not even american!)

no need for prose, you're already set so get your DAC/Amp tbh and this thread can rest
