In the face of not ' knowing ' belief is needed.

We all operate on belief, all day everyday.

Of course 'not knowing' does not mean 'can't find out', but that thinking, if there, would be disloyal to the social group-think.

Ha ha so true .. and if you want them to do what you want, then make them think it's their idea, a side salad of them thinking they are a bit smarter than you can also be useful.

I blame inadequate science (and all) education in HS and college. Science is often taught as a collection of facts, not as a method to determine facts.

Worse, little real science is required for liberal arts majors nowadays.
