So I am looking at getting a better audio input setup at home here mainly for calls and other VOIP scenarios and I'm wondering if a box like this U-Phoria UM2 is worth it...
I might also use this with a Violin ceramic mic that I got for my wife for our anniversary last year.

Planning on getting this Mic too as it was recently reviewed on LTT and the audio quality was impressive for the cost.

I'm open to suggestions either way

Yep, looks like alot of goods for a low price with shipping.
Considering the tests of their stuff in the past.... they have proven they can make solid stuff for a very low price.

Nobody else has any ideas? :/

Maybe I'll just buy it and check it out!

This one is a step up. Near identical functionality. No knobs on top, maybe a plus or not depending upon your preference. This one has the newer MIDAS preamp circuit and the other the older Xenyx preamp circuit. Does that really matter? I don't know.

Both of these are spec with 10 db less dynamic range than the other U-phoria models and have looser spec'd frequency response. Finally these only work at 32khz, 44.1 khz and 48 khz sample rates. That likely doesn't matter for your purposes. These are also USB 1.1 rather than 2.0 like the other Uphoria offerings. Unless money is super tight, I'd probably go on up to the U-phoria 202HD models for $59. It likely has identical performance to the 204HD that Amir reviewed here. It has two channels instead of one which you might wish you had down the road anyway.

I see what you are saying now, the UMC22 is just the UM2 with the MIDAS design instead of Xenyx design.

But you are right that honestly going to the 202 or 204 seems to make the most sense...

Edit: any thoughts on the mic?

I'm going to try it at first with my realtek onboard audio and see if it works at all.
Because I may not need to buy the box.

Don't have a lots to say about the microphone. You'll need an XLR to whatever adapter for the realtek though that can work fine. Something like this.

The frequency response is kind of peaky though. Here is the 8500 and below the SM58 Shure. They peak in the same places, intended to accent voices, but the 8500 peaks 10 db instead only 5 db. Which may be fine, or even helpful on some voices. I don't think you will like it on the violin however.

Yea that's what I am thinking, when LTT tested it the sound was quite clear even through my audio stack.
I used to just use headsets only for VOIP and speakers for everything else... now that I am into high end audio I only use audiophile headphones all day so I need an external mic xD
