Hi everyone,
I was wondering what is your opinion on cheap tube mic preamps such as the MIC 300 from Behringer or Alto ?
Before anyone raises a hue and cries about how low quality Behringer stuff is, I want to underline that I'm completely aware that in no ways would a 60$ piece of gear be able to simulate the effect a more quality preamp would have on the sound chain.
I think at this point it's clear that the idea isn't to give that super quality sound that only expensive gear would give, but to provide, for little budgets, a way to slightly "alter" the sound by giving it something it wouldn't have without (noise floor excepted )
Especially, if one does replace the tube with a more quality one (British Mullard, for instance).
Now onto the main quest : do those "tube devices" really add something to the sound, again, besides some potential noise floor ? Something that might be pleasant to listen to ?
So many of people out there don't have any interest for those little devices, and my point is to try to understand whether it is only a glitter-to-the-face gadget, or something that might really add something to the sound, an aspect that could be interesting for some home studios which haven't the ability to buy 5k$+ of audio equipment ?
Looking forward to your insightful replies !
