Holes in the ceiling aren't the end of the world if you are DIY-inclined, but you do need a good stud finder and the right color of paint for matching (plus spackle, sandpaper, and a roller with the right nap) if you end up removing the installed treatment. If you are not DIY-inclined it probably sounds like a nonstarter.

One trick I like for drilling holes in walls / ceiling is to hold a dustpan right below where you're drilling. Keeps you from having to sweep later.

And my apologies if I sounded argumentative earlier. I was dealing with a serious health condition at the time that had me in a horrible mood. I seem to be recovering so that's nice. I was actually trying to be supportive and then just suggest that there's probably a lot more to get out of the speakers you have with placement and alignment adjustments, and encourage you to engage with them until you're certain you're getting everything you can out of them before buying new things, but I was being sincere about have a blast with the subwoofers if that's your choice. I am personally very annoyed by my subwoofers and really wish I had some full-range speakers, I just need down to 50Hz before rolling off since I have hereditary hearing loss.

After doing some listening I thought I ought to test how well putting a couch cushion over my head and two on the floor 1st reflection point actually measured.

You can see it works pretty well! The ceiling and floor is the first bump at about 2.4ms. The rear wall is the 2nd bump. I got that with a panel behind my head. The last bump at 9.5ms... I'm not sure how that one works, or how I got it too! I wasn't trying for that one. Somehow the panel behind my head got it.

Perceptually the sound is not that much different at first listen. After a few minutes I start to notice things. My mind starts to lock on to the information in the recording without being so distracted by the room reflection tells, and wonderful, magical things start to happen that make my brain feel like it's hearing a different space than the one it's seeing. It reminds me of looking at one of those 3D books that you have to cross your eyes just right in order to see the 3D effect. If the print is not clear or has ghosting issues you'll have a much harder time seeing it. I think the early reflections create a similar barrier that the brain has to work through.

I just received one of them. The second one ended up at the wrong address on the other side of the country and is still on it’s way here. When I get it I’ll start a new thread about setting them up.

My measurements look a lot more like your without treatment measurements than the ones with treatment.

Can't you just hire a professional? That system of yours is mega $$$! It seems like you've got a dedicated space - Is it permanent?

I'd get a Home Cinema / AV installer to measure your room properly (someone who can recommend actual, appropriate acoustic treatment, sub settings / location, DSP etc.).

Yes, it’s permanent. No Cinema/Av in the system. Two channel stereo only. I can take the measurements but I’ve just started working with an online company to help me decide what to do with them.

I have half a DIY system, and at work (if we can call it that))), I sometimes do various things with my hands, but I always dislike drilling into walls and I really dislike drilling into the ceiling. I'm not sure when I'll try cloud, even though I have enough of PET boards and cordless screwdrivers, and the ceiling is wood and drywall . Actual measurements, MLP, ~4 m stereotriangle:

Looks like a nice smooth drop that hits -60 at 200ms... Assuming it's even across the spectrum you can declare mission accomplished right there, why mess with success?

I can't)) There's room for improvement and exploration. It's still pretty good, though . And this is a "living room" + other uses of the room, not a studio or dedicated audiophile room for one armchair\sofa.
Getting back to the topic — I got sidetracked and haven't been following Dave's progress in a while. I'll try to reread it later.
