Beer thread, what you drinkin..

Had a few of these yesterday:

Very nice.

Flipped back to some Ninkasi Total Domination N.W. IPA. Very drinkable most of the time. Sometimes batches go off, but this one is pleasant.

On another note, I was almost drop-to-my-knees stunned when I saw Red Tail Ale on the shelf.

Red Tail is a flashback to the Mendocino Brewing Co. (originally Hopland Brewery). They were among the first CA Micro Brews started up in the early 80s. Red Tail was their flagship brew, an American Red or Amber Ale coming in at 6.1% and a claimed 35 IBU.

SO...

Fogbelt Brewing revitalized Red Tail and released a 4-pack of 16oz cans. Sadly, it does not remind me of a delicious beer I once enjoyed. This looks the part but drinks more like the old Boont Amber from Booneville Brewing, also up in Mendo. To me, the IBU nd carbonation are off and because of this it drinks like a slightly malty Cream Ale with some Caramel Malts for color.

Side note... Mendocino Brewing did a few other beer that all stood out on their own, however I have always felt that their Blue Heron Pale Ale was a true exemplar of a pure American Pale Ale. Similar to Red Tail, it wasn't an overly complicated Malt Bill, and the Hops were likely just as simple with a roughly 35-45 IBU and good crisp carbonation.

In contrast, if you can find a true Pale Ale here in the states, it is now pushing the bounds of a plain American IPA, if not more heavily bittered (not hopped, but bitter!) than what most IPAs should hit the scale at.

Oh well... I'm opening another Total Domination and pouring a neat shot of Richters Sour Mash to go with it!

Whee!

Royal Blenheim , Oxford.,

Titanic brewery ( not oxford , likely Belfast) , golden ale .

Fabulous balance, apricot undertones, sweet ish with a nice refreshing light sour end . Great as a pint .

False Idol Brewing - Helm of Awe 2025
Blended strong ale. Imperial stout aged in Acre whiskey barrels for 14 months, Scotch ale aged in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels for 6 months, and English barleywine aged in O.Z. Tyler bourbon barrels for 14 months then aged on Rwandan vanilla beans. 12.7% abv :)

Forgive the cross post… seems appropriate:

Jack McAuliffe, Craft Brewing Pioneer and founder of New Albion Brewery in 1976, passed away on July 15.

I have really weird taste buds (and smell for that matter).

Stuff which people find sweet are sour to me *** and I can't stand the smell of wine, coffee, tea, spirits etc ... the usual stuff people drink.

I also can't stand the smell (and taste) of what I call "foo foo" beer... the stuff you get from boutique breweries... all seem too "fruity" (as per the post up from mine "Stunningly delicious. Perhaps a bit thin in body, but the rye spice and hint of rosemary blend well with some nuttiness in the malts and a crisp carbonation.")

For me beer needs to have basically [near] zero taste and zero smell (but that doesn't mean bud light or miller light etc, which thankfully you can't get in Kiwi land).

I tend to vacillate between a local brew called Steinlager [Classic] and Kirin and Sol. And when I went to spend big, Guinness.

Peter

*** for example, I love unripe bananas... where when you peel them the skin sticks to the banana. Probably 99.9% of people couldn't stand the taste (they think it's bitter)

I can't stand the taste of mint which is why my teeth have all fallen out as you can't get a toothpaste that doesn't have some degree of "mintiness".

I was a vodka head way back in the day as it is the only spirit that is [near] zero taste and zero smell but had to give it up for "health" reasons.

The list of my weird smell and taste buds is long so I won't list them.

Until our local supermarket put them on sale, don't think they even carried them, but they've had a nice sale price and have been drinking them for a bit....an old buddy of mine, now passed, used to praise Widmer a lot which was part of my reason to try. I like 'em. https://www.widmerbrothers.com/beer/deadlift-imperial-ipa
Wow… I think I used to drink those when I first moved out to The Bay pre Y2K.
If it’s the same stuff I’m thinking of, it was pretty decent and quite affordable. Which was great because at the time I was working for peanuts, playing in a band and living in a house of 6 adults in Bayview/Hunters Point just blocks from Ye Olde Stick!

Well the sale price was $9 for a 4 pk of 16oz cans....now $10 after a week or so. I'd tried some Widmers before, but not this particular one.
