Proper pubs give you a birthday card.

Can't complain for the price I got it at, easy drinking but not much more. Trappist anything is typically around $15/bottle here, I got it for $4/bottle on sale shipped (duty absorbed from the airport store).

I'd never heard of Southern Tier Brewing but picked up a mixed sampler pack. Live Session, with a microphone on the label, was the obvious place to start.

My pet hate is "drinkable" or "session" beers that are, to my humble tastebuds, the breweries default full strength offer watered down to 4 ish percent. Not sure if this is a trend in the States as well as UK?

Yes, and we Canadians consider USA beer to be weak and pisswater :p

There is a time and a place for weaker brews. Washing down ones cornflakes, for example.

Lots of good beer available here in the US :D
It has gotten much better than it was some time ago. I remember going into the beer stores and it was all Coors, Michelob, Miller and other weak beers that taste like water compared to Canadian Beer and have a low alcohol content. The last trip to California I tasted some of the new beers and they where a improvement. :D

"Tiny Drinker" is the most successful "Session" [4.2%] IPA I've had so far, "Deadlift" is the real [8.6%] deal. All four in this 12 pack are worth it.

When was some time ago, 30 years ago? :) Maybe just your choice of store. Most mainstream Canadian beer is no better (and even shared ownership) than the mainstream brands you listed....but there's this thing called craft beer.

Just the average on the side of the road grocer. Nothing fancy. Mainstream Canadian beer is very different than the ones I listed. It is stronger in both flavour and alcohol content. Yeah, I had some craft beer when I was in California for a couple of weeks. Everybody in San Fran was slurping the stuff so I joined in and bought the same stuff.
