It is a looker allright but that’s a price I’d never pay for any component let alone a DAC.

I like this thread. I appreciate the Topping E30 but I cannot love it. dCS Vivaldi is not radical, not outlandish, bold in a very thoughtful and restrained way, well done. dCS Bartok as a style statement is doesn't succeed. It is frustrating. In comparison with the Bartok, the Octo succeeds. The Onkyo isn't bad and in black it is quite nice. The Wadia (I had one) is large, too large, and the inside is very empty (people have said similar about me).

This is really something I could buy, not only does it ace every measurement it's also really unique discrete R2R design with impeccable build quality.

It is usually no problem to convert XLR to RCA. The sweet thing would be to upgrade your amp to one with XLR. I know that wasn't part of your posted question however. If you take away the lip around the face the rest of the component looks to be 430 mm. I've had several components like that.

Really? Up to now what I understood is that's a big no no. Could you explain why you think this should pose no problem?

My ideal dac would be a dac/dsp and streamer in one with a nice display. The minidsp shd comes very close, but I like the looks of the okto a lot.

dsp? It does look pretty though in a high end way. I gather from @amirm that dsp is dealt with in software, Roon at his place. Maybe that's the best solution both sinad, distortion wise and being a practical solution in a world where many dacs lack dsp. (i know only three: minidsp, rme, quedelix).

For a display I was more thinking along the lines of a big screen, displaying cover art and/or db meter. Strange that such a solution is a niche or basically diy.
