Well past time to get bass traps. How effective would it be to mount them above my subwoofers or do I need to move my subwoofers out from the wall and place the bass traps behind them? 6’ traps will fit above the HSU VTF-TN1’s

What types of traps are you thinking of? If you're thinking of diaphramatic traps they should go against the walls in the corners. They also need to be tuned to the worst bass modes your room has. If you're thinking of absorbers, don't bother. Absorbers thick enough to be effective at bass frequencies would probably take up more room than you're willing to allocate to them.

You’re no fun…. I was going to do 18”x18”x6’ stuffed with rockwool. Hopefully it does more than nothing

Well here is a simple experement for you TankTop:

Take an Entire package of rockwool. Set it on top of your subwoofer. Measure before/after.
Then set it behind your subwoofer and measure.
If results are not satisfactory then take the package back to Lowes and return it.
