Balanced recommendation please

Please understand that the "balanced" noise rejection is performed by the input device that subtracts the hot from the cold, which thus cancels out (rejects) any common noise that was introduced in the cable transmission.

An unbalanced input device does not have that mechanism since it is only taking input in from a single conductor. As a result, whatever you do in the cable won't matter.

Proper shielding is an independent matter. Coax cables are already designed to provide the proper shielding for unbalanced analog signal transmission over long runs (and short runs).
Do you think the mogami 2534 has this proper sheilding, do you think it is suitable for this application

Mogami 2534 is a quad conductor plus shield cable typically used for XLR (balanced) connections. It is overkill for single-ended RCA cables, not needful for that application. For XLR to XLR in a high-noise environment it works great, and alot of folk use it at home even though I tend to think it is overkill there as well. It won't hurt anything but your wallet.

Thanks. I've already purchased it though, that's the thing.
Would save me having to spend more money on buying more cable, or do you think i would be better off with a different cable

Could you provide a link to what you purchased, since the connectors and the wiring matter as much. And remind us of what devices you are connecting with that cable.

So you don't think the mogami 2534 is proper coaxial cable
It is not a coaxial cable.

Google RG59 to see what an RF-capable coaxial cable looks like.

It's not coaxial but it will be perfectly ok.
I use it everywhere for decades, and I mean everywhere apart from speaker cable.

It's a pain to work with, needs a decent soldering iron, good paste, etc but if made right is as silent as it should be.
Make sure you don't overheat it as the inner conductors will melt and stick to each other, nice temp, good amount of paste and quick (just make sure you don't have gold solders, and at each case you have to measure it afterwards at all directions to see the resistance) .

A good trick is to put heatshrink sleeve to each conductor before soldering, this way they won't stick to each other.
I even use both a balanced and an unbalanced 6 meter (!) each to measure my gear as they sit,as I like to see their results in real life and never messed with it!

It's fine.

Not sure what you mean here, the cable either works or doesn't. If you mean, how does it sound... cables generally don't have a sound.

Haha, of course they do. You clearly haven’t tried different cables.
In response to the post above, “is there anything better”, of course there is - but you’ll pay more.

While waiting for a better cable, I bought a 10m Mogami 2549 quad XLR. It does the job, and for $200 it’s more than fine. But it sounds sterile, and not at all as great as the previous cable (which was too short).

Does the Mogami suck? No, for the money, it’s great. I’m sure it measures well, etc. But if you have a great system, it won’t do anything positive to it.

I suspect most of you on this forum have never heard a world class system, which is sad.
Just thought I’d share as I was just reminded how big of a difference cables make.

Could u share what were the main components (speaker/amp/source) of this “world class system” you’ve heard? I am just curious about the setup…

(Recently I had the opportunity to listen to a $1m horn system in a well treated room it had both analog & digital sources … it didn’t go well with my ears unfortunately ... the system had some expensive cables & grounding boxes)

Maybe sharing how much of a difference placebo makes too. What do you think the cable is doing that Mogami cable is failing to do?

LOL thanks for the laugh. Which nonsense cable outfit did you buy into particularly? Please educate us on world class systems, too...

The physics involved with audio cables, voltage dividers, capacitive and inductive reactance determine that audio cables do not have a sound providing they can conduct the signal without becoming resistive. You are deluded and it is almost guaranteed that you have never done an ABX test to prove that cables do not sound different.

It’s been years now since I gullibly purchased or even used an audiophile cable. I still miss some of the naive fun of high end audio (when I used to work at a shop part time in high school and bought stuff at cost), but now enjoy a far nicer system.

It wasn’t until maybe 5-10 years later that I understood the truth about cables. I still hate seeing the snake oil cables in local high end shops (and the ads online). I think the whole hobby would be better if all the tweaks and quackery disappeared overnight.

JGH was in a better position than most to lament the turn away from measurements and engineering.

Mogami W2534 will be fine in your application. The determining factor in cable performance—whether you make them or someone else makes them for you—is the quality of the workmanship in the termination of the cable. If you are DIY'ing the cables, you should have well-practiced, superior skills in order to get the most out of your purchase. If buying pre-made cables, examine the quality of the workmanship in the termination of the connectors.

For Unbalanced: Mogami W2964 or W2965
I just wish to add there are apparently two different kinds of Mogami 2964: one with and one without the "W" in the cable part number.

The W2964 seems to have a single served shield.

The 2964 have two served shields woven in opposite directions [1], same construction as the Gotham GAC-1 coaxial cable. As a result, the resistance of the shield is lower. The parasitic capacitance is also lower, implying a different geometry of the conductors.

I'm not sure that is the case; and I suspect that it is just a nomenclature difference of when the "W" is used before the wire part number.

In the technical manual, there is only reference to "2964"; and no mention at all of "W2964". On the flip side, that product page link for the "W2964" includes a picture of the cable that is simply labeled as "2964".

The wire that I have also only includes "2964", which is described by Performance Audio as Mogami W2964 PURO II Subminiature & Miniature Coaxial Cable.

Specifications and technical drawing of the 2964 in the 2019 technical catalog are nevertheless different than those published by Mogami on his website as of today about the W2964 : https://mogamicable.com/category/bulk/video/subminiature_miniature/

I very much suspect the original 2964 has evolved over time into an alternative more economical design, but I can be mistaken.

Edit :
I just observed the extremity of a sample of 2964 I bought under a magnifying glass and there unquestionably are two layers of served shield.

It should be easy to check if any other cable bearing the 2964 number has only one shield.

I tried to take a macro on which the inner shield around the insulation of the core barely protrude from the outer shield, but the photo apparatus and the photographer are not that good !
