AXPONA 2026: Esoteric PMC Teac

Ah! Because we actually designed the whole system, and didn’t just plop a huge car audio sub into a box, we were able to consider this. The cone is fully removable, and replacing the coil pack takes 2 people 15 minutes with only access to the front and basic hand tools. We have a time lapse video somewhere. Let me dig it up to share.
I am genuinely curious how it all works out, practically.

I’m sorry you didn’t get to hear it.
Well, I thought it was some gimmick. If I had read what you wrote here, I would have listened. :)

It looks like it could move enough air to reproduce that ad with the guy in his chair having his hair blown back by the sound.

Found it. Was an ad for Maxell cassette tapes from 1979.

@Amir So now a test is needed - Deus lo vult :)

Getting it upstairs for listening might require a miracle though

Imagine an array with four of them... But there might be some people out there who would try this.
I guess the THD might be very low - we'll see.

With a diameter of 60" (152.4 cm) and an Xmax of 30 mm, the displacement volume is 54.6 liters.
A 12-inch driver with an Xmax of 10 mm has an average displacement volume of around 0.5 liters.

The subwoofer—whose technical design I have the utmost respect for—thus has roughly the same output as 100 subwoofers with 12-inch drivers combined, although it’s difficult to make this comparison, since the Deus will behave differently in many ways than 100 subs in a cascade.

But $170,000 is quite a lot of money, and I suspect that many people would prefer to use several individual subwoofers for that reason alone. Room acoustics are also likely to be easier to manage with several distributed subs.
The Deus is certainly a visual and technical statement.

If you have to ask… $170k for the sub and amp through our US distributor Playback Distribution. And it is built in our facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The spec sheet says this about the amplifier: "20kW Class D amplifier with 2U rackmount DSP (real-time limiters, thermal & power monitoring, user-adjustable DSP)". The spec for the (extremely) loudspeaker says: "Power Handling 20,000W Peak / 10,000W Continuous".

Here is my question: What AC power connector is used on the wall end of the line cord/power cable for this monster Class D power amp? Is it some sort of 50-amp NEMA plug?
