I wrote down "lousy track." Sounds that way on headphones. Distorted bass and lo-fi overall quality. They should hire someone else to pick proper music.

Yup. Playback designs was started by an ex engineer from Sony I think and has emphasis on DSD, 1-bit design. Has fallen out of favor in the last few years but prior, it was a sign of having arrived if you had one.

Since you had press credentials, did you ask them if they would be willing to give one for measurement, review?
How big would Sinad have to be to justify that money? ;)

2TB SSD for $1450? if this is not daylight robbery, I don't know what is
You forgot that tiny USB output that every laptop has for 1,650 dollars!
This is worse than daylight robbery....You even have to thank him for not taking more from you(your life perhaps:eek:)
Don't these people have any boundaries?

But it's all "special"... ;)
PhoenixUSB Board
  • Regenerated and Reclocked USB signal to your Class 2 USB DAC, greatly increasing sound quality
  • High-precision 3ppb 24MHz OCXO clock for greatly improved timing and signal integrity
  • Ultra-low noise LT3045 linear regulators for each independent voltage, no switching regulators on main USB chip
  • Provides a pristine 5V line for the USB connection on your DAC
The ZENith Next-Gen also features a pSLC (pseudo Single-Level Cell) industrial-grade SSD for the OS, powered independently, is added directly to the PreciseAudio board. As pSLC contains simplified controllers, they generate much less EMI compared to standard SSDs. Being the OS SSD that bears most of the system work, this results in a considerably lower operating noise with direct impact on sound quality.

Do please remember that these speaker confections are aimed at what I regard as the 'beer budget high end' market, where $100k models are pretty commonplace. The electronics have to reflect that also in this market.
the what?
Sure you can create a luxury product and charge premium for it. But this is beyond ridiculous to charge 10x for a simple 2TB SSD. If you want an insane mark up, at least make some excuse to cover it up

Apologies, I'm talking about the ATC speakers, not the 2TB SSD.

Whether 'we here' like it or not, the high end exists still and appears to continue to be 'aspirational' in some parts of the world. I was told of one lucrative market where price is everything, the higher the better and products are judged on that, regardless of real-world performance. Weave a story and in some cases, encase the circuits in lavish boxes to try to justify the expense and off you go. HiFi news magazine has been pandering to this market for many years now and as with 'Absolute Sound' magazine, I now feel somewhat nauseous when I look at the gear being reviewed.

It is nice to see the tape support on that preamp. The knobs and buttons have a nice design, but where the side panels meet the front is ugly, in my opinion. In production since 1996 would be an interesting parts sourcing problem.

Their professional monitors are popular, I wonder what percentage of sales are home speakers, and what their home speaker dealer network looks like. I think there is a dealer in Seattle or some studios, maybe they can lend ASR one to test? The ATC SCM25A is their base studio monitor.

The EL50 is essentially the SCM50ASL at about $20K a pair, so even with the home-friendly cabinet, it is very profitable.

Well, at least they are not trying to hide the purpose of their gear.

As for the speakers, I thought ATC was a monitor brand, but these are looking like both feet firmly planted in home hifi territory... have they given up on the pro market or are they trying to have it both ways?
