AVR vs integrated amp for stereo music+TV

Which WiiM are you using?

They’ve just released (or are just about to release?) in beta an update to support Dolby digital 5.1 and wireless surrounds.

I’m presuming that this will include support for the 0.1 channel.

At the moment it only appears to be listed for the Ultra, not the Amp/Amp Pro.

Whilst I can’t be certain, I wouldn’t want to come to a public forum and state as fact that anyone will definitely need an AV amp.

I await the update with great interest.
I tested using the WiiM amp fed from a Windows PC. I've also just realized that I'm feeding it via analog Line-Out  ... my results here are useless!

It does appear that @DRC’s information was inaccurate.

I was talking about the existing situation rather than some vague description of a future beta feature that may or may not come to fruition. The current position is that the LFE channel is not available. Also, WiiM only support the outdated Dolby Digital rather than Dolby Digital Plus or DTS.

I was very clear in my first post that this was an upcoming feature.

I will also vouch for WiiM's excellent track record to share, and subsequently deliver on their roadmaps. Just this week I had a change in behaviour of subwoofer output when using USB external DAC/headphone amp. Sure enough, I checked the roadmap and this was an announced enhancement they had in the roadmap.

In my case, I've now added a feature request to configure subwoofer status by output :) The point stands, though, that their roadmap is not purely aspirational.

Usually, WiiM deliver on their roadmaps, but what happened to AirPlay on the Ultra! I base my comments on what is actually available as that avoids any disappointment.

But what you said was:

If you are getting a sub and want the LFE (.1) channel when watching TV then you need an AVR.

It was clearly implicit, and close to explicit, that WiiM wouldn’t do the job.

You certainly gave absolutely no hint whatsoever that this might even be a possibility.

At the moment, the WiiM won’t do the job. I deal in facts. I would not recommend a product on the basis that it might be able to do the job in the future.

And that’s fine. But that’s not we’re discussing, and you’re being evasive.

It’s not that you refused to recommend a product in the basis that it might not be able to do a job.

It’s that you refused to accept the possibility that it might. And, indeed, probably would.

Tying back to the OP's requirements - LFE was never mentioned as a requirement. The choice to include a subwoofer was to take low frequencies off of the Elac speakers (and off-load some of the power from the main channel amp in the process).

DRC, you raise concerns that may help other folks make their decision for their application, but for OP's purposes as they have stated them, the WiiM amp does meet their requirements. The debate on LFE inclusion, surround formats and their compatibility, etc. is tangential to the original question.
