Posted on the AV section but have not got any replies, so trying here now...

I have my Pioneer SC-LX86 AVR connected to a smart plug now. I am wondering if it is okay to power it off via the plug or whether I should use the power button on the AVR first?
ie. Can I damage the AVR by powering on/off via the smart plug. I believe that it is bad to do this with TVs, so wondering what the situation is with AVRs.

PS. When I power it back on via the plug after it is powered off this way, it goes straight to the "on" state, as opposed to the "stand by" state. (As when the power button is used.)

Thanks in advance.

I always switch my devices to standby mode before I unplug them from the power supply.
The fact that the LX86 switches on completely after being switched off hard only indicates that it has a "last state" function.

Thanks.
The reason I am asking is that it is much more convenient for me to switch everything off at once via the main smart plug.
However I do not want to damage the AVR if this is possible, as with TVs.
(I use a tablet to control my music. The TV is off.)

Anyone?

How clearly do you have to say that?

In principle, I would not switch off any device hard, among other things, because then a much higher current consumption would be interrupted.
Just pull the power plug out while it is running and listen for the spark. Do you think that's a good thing?
My understanding of this comes from a professional and private perspective with several thousand devices from IT, industry and also audio over the last 40 years.

And I would be a little cautious with an LX86 that is still running, or are you not aware of the problem with the failures?

Sorry, I don't understand. I was under the assumption that there's no problem doing so with most audio gear ie: DACs, amps, active speakers etc. I am talking about when idle obviously. Clearly I know not to do so with computers and, as previously mentioned TVs.

Have searched online but I am unaware of failures with the SC-LX86, which is why I am asking...

If you ask long enough, someone will say it's not a problem.
But if you're waiting for the answer that suits you best, what's the point of asking?
Just do it, because no matter who says something, the responsibility is yours.
Do you think that if a manufacturer doesn't install a switch on the front of a device that suddenly cuts off the entire power supply, there's no reason for that?

The funny thing is that you've already answered your own question. You wouldn't turn off the TV and computer? And you think the LX86 doesn't have any software or computer chip/MCU? There were no firmware updates for that either?
Even normal power amplifiers have MCUs installed for control and monitoring these days.

Many LX7x and LX8x, including the LX86, had a digital circuit board that often broke and there have been no spare parts or repair options for a long time.

I've got a Nord Hypex power amp and my DAC's (Matrix Audio) trigger doesn't play nice with non-MA equipment.

I emailed Nord and asked them if there was any issue with powering off the power amp via a smart plug as the 12v trigger doesn't work. Nord said, there is no difference between using the 12v trigger on the amp vs smart plug cutting the power.
