AVI DM10 - How well could they work in a PA System

I would appreciate some advice from the experienced heads on the forum.

I own pair of AVI DM10s. always found them to be very clear, not just musically but also for speach. Have used for movies and music for years.
However i appreciate there was room for improvement with speach, and always though with right DSP speach would improve

I want to use it as a PA system for 1 day, we are holding a commemoration event.
Thinking of pairing with a mixer and mic.
Will have a church hall with 70-80 guests.

Can a mixer improve signal enough to make clear speach
Would i. run into problems with the throw (is that the right term, in how far and wide the sound reaches)

Is there any advice on how to make this work best.
Or should i be looking to hire a PA system

That’s a fairly large crowd for such small speakers. Typically even the bottom-tier PA speakers have at least 8” woofers. You can probably get away with it as long as your mixer has a fairly high high pass filter, say 100-150 Hz.

Even then, not sure I’d be willing to risk speakers as expensive as these; if someone happens to drop a mic, it’ll probably damage the speakers. So if the mixer has built-in compression, I’d certainly use it.

Don't even think about it, you'll realise how lost they are the moment you set them up in such a large space.

Expect distortion, maybe even blown drivers...

Thanks for the advice
thats pretty clear i was being to ambitious.

A mixer won't "improve" the speech (other than tone controls) but you'll need one for the mic for two reasons -

1. You need a microphone preamp (built into the mixer).
2. Stage-studio mics aren't compatible with regular soundcards or laptops and you get latency (delay) through the computer.

So yes, I'd recommend renting a system.

PA speakers tend to be more efficient-sensitive than hi-fi speakers or monitors. So they more-easily go louder in a bigger room and with bigger-noisier crowds.

If everyone keeps very quiet they will work ok for giving a speech, better than just trying to speak loudly. However I agree with others that they will get lost in the space if you want to listen to music or make announcements when people are talking. As @RobL suggests, renting a basic PA system will help you avoid disappointment and problems.

Yep, I have an Evolve 50m and a single unit would be sufficient for a crowd that size. I used mine at an outdoor wedding with 120 guests and it was more than sufficient…we actually had the cops show up from a noise complaint and the closest neighbour was 1/2km away lol.
