I use the following in a combined stereo/7.1 system

Squeezebox
Tag McLaren dac20
Audiolab 8000q stereo analogue pre
ATI 2000 power amplifiers
Lexicon mc-8 av pre

Lexicon mc-8 left and right pre out go into a regular input on the 8000q.
Dac20 output into another input.
8000q pre out into ATI amp.

The 8000q has a gain setting.

Gain set to 9, and not touched.
Set volume on mc-8 source to 12 o clock, and set mc-8 levels to 75db. Mark level on 8000q with white sticker

Calibrated other speakrs to 75db, mc-8 goes into other ATI channels and sub.

So when I listen to music from dac, reduce volume and change input
Listen to av, change input and increase volume to marked position

I'm wondering if there is a better way to set levels so the mc-8 output it not over driving the pre, or too low causing noise to boosting level.

Gain on power amps is 29db.
8000q doesn't have a HT bypass input

bypass the 2 channel preamp and switch your signal directly to go directly from the pre-pro to the amp for HT mode. Use an automated switch controlled by your pre-pros 12V trigger.

Use a switch at the input of the ATI 2000 and switch between Lexicon and Audiolab.

Other than using a switch you could
1) connect the squeezebox to a digital input of the pre-pre and lose the separate dac and preamp
2) Connect the DAC output to an analog in of your pre-pro and lose the preamp
3) buy some new stuff - lots of options

Do you use subwoofers for music?
Also do you pre-pro and amps support XLR?

Don't want switch.
Subwoofer is only used from av pre.
Subwoofer not connected to stereo pre

Ideally id the 8000q had HT bypass buy it doesn't.

8000q and dac much better than the av for stereo.

How about an automatic switch? Either signal sensing or controlled off 12v trigger?
