Aux out of an Amazon Echo

In the past, I have used an USB OTG connection to sucessfully use a DAC with an Android phone. It doesn't require a special driver, just generic USB-Audio. When the adapter arrives I'll do the experiment and report back.
I hope it works!

I have and use several echo devices including the Show 5 and Echo Input. They are great for streaming Spotify, and a great way to get Sirius XM in the house.

I think all these devices use a similar DAC as they all sound the same to me >>> very good if you keep the volume at 9. Raise the volume to 10 and you'll hear distortion set it. Too bad the newer models no longer have aux out. Glad I ended up with six units in all. A few spares.

Alas, it does not work. At least not with an Echo Show 8.

Connecting a USB audio device to the micro-usb port and rebooting. The Echo does "see" the new audio device and (I assume) makes it the default. Spotify will play, but nothing is heard anywhere.

Also, voice control is disabled. I presume this is because it uses the same built-in audio device for both commands and playing media. That device is switched offline by connecting the external device.

If I were more ambitious, I would poke around inside with a probe to find where the audio stream could be accessed in digital form. With a little added electronics that digital stream could likely be broken out to feed an external device.

It appears that the low-cost way to achieve digital output from Amazon Music is a Wiim Mini. This can be designated as the output device for an existing Echo that handles voice commands. The Wiim Mini has SPDIF/TOSLINK output, which is what we need to feed a pair of existing Meridian M6 powered speakers for this project.
