Auro Technologies has filed for bankruptcy.

The Belgian sound specialist Auro Technologies has filed for bankruptcy as a precaution. This was announced this Friday morning. Auro Technologies is internationally known for its “Auro 3D” sound format, which competes with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The Galaxy Studios, from which Auro Technologies was spun off at the time, are not directly affected by the insolvency, as this is an independent company.

In an interview with c't, the founder and CEO of the Belgian company, Wilfried van Baelen, explained that the step had become necessary after a deal with a new investor recently fell through after several months of negotiations. The interested parties dropped out after it turned out that the increase in sales they were asking for could not be achieved under the current market conditions.

Although they do not want to license out individual technologies, when push comes to shove, licensing Auromatic makes sense. Given where Atmos and DTS:X are presently, I am not sure I really care about Auro3D in my next HT AVR and while they are restructuring, Dolby and Xperi can keep moving along. I am actually surprised that IMAX Enhanced has gotten some renewed interest with Disney+.

I sort of care about Auro 3D (More then Onkyo tbh). I think Auro 3D was more known for upmixing DA and DTSX tracks very well but not there actual Auro 3D movies. I think what "killed" Auro was that they had a small market here in America, and even when people starting to own Auro 3D AVR here, there was very very few titles. If Auro tried harder, they would've been fine.
