Audyssey One - Nexus (Automated hi-res Denon/Marantz calibration with REW/Umik-1/2)

I have to say I've been pretty happy with my attempts so far to add back a bit of "sparkle" to the high end, but haven't been so happy with the bass, and this helps explain why. Bass was better before trying my tweaking.
No it wasn't. All that really happened was your total loudness of the music dropped after the treble boost.
…Acoustica reduces the overall level (including the bass region of course) by about 3dB, possibly because I'm not using a high shelf, plus whatever other magic he's doing. I can then add back the reduced bass level by adding 3dB of bass fill. So I "think" I can accomplish my goal now that I understand the process a bit better. I can also now better understand why B&W sells as many speakers as they do to the geezer community...

No, don't do that. That will muck up the bass to midrange balance.

All you need to do is turn the volume up by the same amount that you boosted the treble.

Cheers

In his Tutorial he had front+ surround set to fullrange/large for messurements. After he Importen the Nexus ady file, it is large for front and small for rest. Is this on purpose? I am having 4x same speaker as Front and Surrounds.

That's double bass mode for fronts and it's normal.

Is there anything similarly user friendly and powerful for equalization purposes which doesn't require a sub in the set up?
I've ran through the whole procedure (only to not read ahead) and realize a sub is necessary to do the optimization.

On the positive.. I now have multiple in depth measurements in REW from my set up. :)

Hello guys, is there any chance of getting this to work without a Sub?
Some of the older versions of A1 can be pushed into doing it for stereo / 2.0 setups if you make it a 2.1 setup by temporarily hooking a sub up AND if your fronts are truly playing into the 30s. I managed to do it with A1 Evo Neuron 2.4. Might still work with the Force large front speakers in Nexus, but I have not tried this on the 2.0 setup since the Neuron 2.4 calibration is <chef's kiss>perfect in that room. I would not try no sub for a multichannel setup.

...normal for A1, but not for Audyssey, which recommends to set all speakers to 'small' when there is a subwoofer.

Hi

Late, very, very late to the party...

I have been satisfied for many years about my Audio system. Cheap, immensely satisfying and a middle finger to my past audiophile life, when I believed that price was correlated to performance... This Atmos Multi-Channel HT & music system, cost for true 20 Hz to 20 kHz (full-range), >106 dB, at the MLP, level of performance around $5000, HT, BenQ HT 20250A projector , miniSAP 2x4 included ... Room is concrete 3.5 x 5 x 2.8 meters ... Dedicated.
I use Audyssey Mult-EQX with good results. Recently had to repaint the walls followed by a blown lamp. surround speakers not installed on the walls ... decided to just run the system on 2-channel, MSO-ed subwoofers ... fired Audyssey Mul-EQX on, 2-channel... Good sound as per usual but ,,, something was missing..
Measured and re-measured, played around with "house" curve ... often good , still no cigar ...
On a whim decided to try OCA Evo A-1 Express.

Blown away!

WTF!?

Went back and forth between Mult-EQX and OCA EVO A1 ... Granted, I did not level match, stiil, the clear the winner to my ears and preferences ? OCA EVo A1Express...

That version is easier than it sounds. We are all too used to fancy GUI and touch this and that, and .. graphics...
I just used the Audyssey AMCH microphone, the one that comes with Denon Receivers; I measured at the MLP and around it a small sphere ,approximately the size of a human face and ...

WTF!! ?

....

I am a convert.

I will go full A1 Evo Acoustica (or latest iteration) , once I return to full Atmos HT surround, I might in the meantime acquire a larger bigger, better subwoofer... As for the other speakers? I see (hear :)) no need to change them.. I no longer can even retain a shred of long lost audiophiles creds ... with my main speakers being the cheap JBL LSR 308 .. and my 2 subs, the unglamorous and cheap Dayton Audio Sub 1500 ...

Just one complication that could be related to my own network. I had to enter manually the IP address of my receiver, it did not find it automatically

@OCA incoming PM ...

And to anyone with compatible Denon or Marantz AVR.. Try the OCA Evo1 Express.. You will be very surprised... and it is easy... literally 10 minutes from start to finish and good to sublime sound..

Hi

You will perdon the hyperbolic tenor of this post ...

I would suggest to anyone with a compatible Denon or Marantz AVR and decent complement of speakers to try the OCA Evo Express.
The A1 Evo Express shall unlock a level of performance from your Denon/Marantz AVR-based that in all likelihood, most enthusiasts were (are) not aware of. This is transformative. Do not be put off by the fact that you don't know much about REW, or how to measure your speakers or a room ... You just don't need any previous knowledge of any of these. You will need to know how to download and install REW beta and just follow the instructions from the linked video above...

The results that I am now enjoying have me wondering about the audio industry in general, in particular of the level of disinformation practiced by a particular segment of the audio industry. This segment, that will remain nameless, continues to spew the anti DSP, anti EQ anti DRC sentiments pushing ridiculously priced components that can not sound better than an AVR ... >$10,000 for distortion machines, are the norm in this segment, there are many exemples of amplifiers with >10% THD and drooping frequency response at the extreme of audible frequency range, that not able to go over 50 watts (Oh yes these exist) ... IOW worse performance than a sub $200 AiyimaA80 (!!!) ... Yes...
OTOH there are the usual DRC, some otherworldly complex ... Results depends sometimes on intricate knowledge of acoustics, even of psycho-acoustics .. And none are cheap.

And there are the OCA Scripts. Free.

Please try these, especially the Evo Express.. You can always revert to what you were enjoying. I won't

I followed your suggestion. The measurement process was not totally painless, in the end I had to fully power-off/power-on my receiver before it would start measuring, but I am very pleased with the result. @OCA I am quite impressed by what you have achieved. My X2600H is less than optimal because it has only Audyssey MultiEQ XT and no possibility to store dedicated correction setups (I would like to have a dedicated one for music) but the spatial presentation has clearly improved. I will never know what the different Dirac iterations are capable of, as my X2600H is not compatible with them, but I doubt there is much to gain. I think D&M should pay you because of the added value you have created for their products. ;-) OCA Evo Express is where I would start with my setup process if I ever buy another matching/supported receiver, and probably look not any further. Thanks!
